Why gentlemen no longer prefer blondes
Last updated at 10:13am on 4th September 2005
Gentlemen no longer prefer blondes, according to a new study.
Modern men want brains and sophistication which are most often associated with brunettes, researchers at City University found.
Their study into hair colour and the intensity of attraction showed that 51 per cent of men thought brunettes were more attractive.
Researchers showed a sample of 1,500 men three pictures of the same model digitally enhanced as a blonde, a brunette and a redhead.
They were then asked to give their impressions of the model's personality based on her hair colour.
Brunettes were described as intelligent by 81 per cent of respondents, while 67 per cent of men described them as independent and self sufficient.
Two-thirds of the respondents (62 per cent) said the brunette women appeared stable and competent. The blonde model was described as needy and lacking in independence by 40 per cent of the men questioned.
Two-thirds (63 per cent) said the blonde looked friendly and approachable, while 59 per cent thought she was an extrovert.
Red heads were thought to be intelligent by 79 per cent of the men, although 45 per cent described them as neurotic.
Some 64 per cent of respondents agreed with the stereotype that the red head seemed temperamental and fiery.
Symbol of youth
City University Professor of Psychology Peter Ayton who led the research said that blonde hair had historically been seen as a symbol of youth which was attractive to men.
He added: "As the role of women has evolved, men's' expectations of women have changed," he said.
"They're looking for more intense, equal partnerships and appearance has a large role to play. It's even possible that certain hair colours can indicate wealth and experience."
The study was carried out last month. It was commissioned by hair products company Sunsilk.
Steve Kearns, Sunsilk brand manager, said: "We saw a big rise in the number of women wanting products to help make the most of their hair colour and wanted to investigate the psychological reasons behind colour and the intensity of attraction."

| I think it's quite annoying that blonde people are associated with stupidity, and sometimes also with promiscuosity. It's a form of discrimination based on genetics. I think it all boils down to the fact that in ancient Roman times low-class, uneducated prostitutes worse blonde wigs to attract attention, which gave blonde-haired women (an men, to a lesser extent) this unflattering stereotype. What do you people think? Are redheads more "fiesty"? Are brunettes more educated? Are blondes more fun? |

Personally, I tend to find redheads more attractive. Which is ironic, considering I had a phobia of people with red hair when I was little....
Hmm.... Wonder what the psychoanalysts would say about that? |
