People 13yrs and older were considered audults a long time ago. Why not now? What has changed from back when?

Being an "adult" should be determined by the individual character, not by some stupid, arbitrary number. What's changed from back then? Well, age 18 (age of majority) is basically the end of high school.

adolescence is a relatively recent phenomenon. as long as it exists, very few thirteen-year-olds will be considered adults.

challenge? puberty and Jr. High were enough of a challenge for me thanks.......and no they're not genentically dumber, haven't you ever heard the old saying "young, dumb, and full of......." well, we all know how it ends :wink:

I'm guessing it has something to do with lifespan and with reduced need for hard physical labor. Since we live past the age of 40 (generally) now, it's not necessary for a person to begin their adult life so early. Also, since the whole family no longer has to work to put bread on the table, the kids can be kids for longer before they start making their own way.

CCD got it right... when that was commonly accepted the average lifespan was around 30. That would make the average 13yo middle aged, and therefore, an adult of the times.

Easy enough right? I am curious however... would you happen to be about 13 and rather frustrated? :lol:

Because life expentancy was much much lower. When old age was considered mid twenties, then sure... 13 should have been considered adult.

I think we were looking for a deeper meaning than simply a definition based on law, for law could change depending on time, location, those in power, or any number of things. He meant, what about a person, makes them an adult, that without, they are not an adult.
