I kid you not. Obviously underwhelmed with feeling for the 5th anniversary of 9-11, the GOP hits another home run. The beautifully engraved white invitation cards
(View card: http://www.boingboing.net/2006/09/06/shoot_doves_with_rep.html
invited recipients to join the hosts at their home for a fun-filled Republican fundraiser for Republican nominee Carol Floyd - running for the position of State Superintendent of Education in South Carolina.
A perfect activity for the 5th anniversary of 9-11: Republicans gathering together to raise money by shooting white doves, the universal symbol of peace. The price? A mere $1000.00 per person.
Karen Floyd is a real candidate, in SC, for Sec of Ed: http://www.karenfloyd2006.com/
Someone please tell me this was a spoof. Please. |

| That's symbolically better than white doves - I was about to have a kibbee - but jeeez, doesn't anyone else think this was in exceptionally bad taste on 9-11? |

I can see that
but most of the people that would give a republican candidate money would most likley want to shoot something on 9-11........it's one way we conservatives deal with our grief; shootin stuff, blowing stuff up, drinkin, fixin cars, buildin decks, drinkin some more, eatin red meat, you see where I'm going with all this..... |

Let's see....
killing a living creature that can feel and fear
shooting at an inanimate target
Yes. I think it does. Especially from the party that 'values life' so loudly. Somehow, the concept of killing something never struck me as 'fun.' But then again, I'm not a Republican. |

Nothing wrong with that.
We value human life, life of HUMANS. not of tiny birds. btw there are many people who hunt that arent republicans. Personally i'd only hunt if i'd eat what i caught. |

No, that's legit, wannabe; nothing wrong with calling me on an opinion.
But I doubt you saw me say anywhere that anything to do with abortion might be 'fun.' You would have seen me posit that a fertilized egg isn't the same as a child (or even 2-3rd trimester)....but those birds are terrified, feel pain, etc.
Sorry, I'm being a drag to all the hunters. My bad.
:hy: But now that you mention it, YA - this'll drive a few of the prolifers positively insane. LOL |

Something being not fun does not make it right. The fact people have any fun is immaterial to this debate. you seem to be ok with killing babies yet a few birds is not ok? |

There may well have been some slight inside joke mentality going on with the choice of having a dove hunt on September 11th. One person's bad taste is another's guffaw.
I guffawed. |

:lol:nice post
I guess for me the whole thing boils down to over-all cruelty.....I eat Chickens, they are treated far crueler then game birds, go through way more fear and pain then any hunted bird ever will.
So if I shoot and eat a game bird instead of a chicken then.....by my weird logic.....I'm contributing to less cruelty in this world. This logic works for cows and deer too(ever more so because there are so many deer in my state they starve during the winter). It would be nice if some-day all the meat I ate came from game animals......far less cruelty.......course I could just stop eating meat  ....nah!
(seriously my last g-friend was a vegitarian, so I tried to eat like her....i gained 20 pounds! still trying to loose the weight) |

I think the fact that people have fun killing birds has everything to do with this debate; I doubt people payed $1k a head to come and do something they hated.
I'm "ok with killing babies?" If you're one of those nuts who views a fertilized egg as a BABY, then yup... I sure would be...to YOU. (Sorry, it's too late at night to word things more diplomatically; my edit mode starts to malfunction after midnight..) Now if you feel the need to rail against me for that view, fine, but take it to Abortion threads.
wannabe: as odd as it may sound (I'm vegan too) I agree with your reasoning regarding the game as food vs commercial meat raising practices. If we are what we eat, and we raise our meat supply the way we do...ugh.
You're th first person I've ever heard say they gained weight on a vegan diet...lol. Too much starch, or not enough protein sources. |
