It seems to me that the sole debate of the Ameircan revolution was the idea of virtual democracy.
By that I mean, represenatitves in British parliment would always serve "the best interests of the empire." Regardless whether or not the colonists had actual representatives in British parliment.
As ridiculous as it sounds, there were British towns that existed by the means of virtual democracy. The British bickered back and forth with the Americans citing examples of many places that payed taxes to the government, however were not represented. However, the Americans argued that these towns recieved many benifets of British legislation which really had no effect whatsoever on the colonies. (As most British legislation back then pertained to local issues.)
The colonists argued that they did not want to be represented, because of geographical factors. (It would be rather stupid for colonists to vote on legislation that they knew nothing about and didn't really care about)
Edmond Burke, a "colonial sympathizer" in pariliment argued that Americans would have broken away (naturally) from direct governing from Britain eventually.
So my question would be...
Were the colonists "just" in their disagreement with virtual democracy? |

We're a bunch of tax evasion traitors. Who's going to ague the facts? |

It wasn't as simple as "tax evasion", there were some serious ideological differences between the whigs and members of parliment. (Virtual democracy being one of these)
Unfortuantley, it isn't far from the truth to say that the American Revolution was primarily started due to money. |
