this is something thath as bothered me for a while, even when i was in London last year. What is the difference between the United Kingdom and Great Britain and when did the decision to change names come and why? When reading about the american revolution i think the "british" is used synonymous with the "english."

1) this should probably be in the Lounge.

2) the UK is comprised of England, Wales, Scotland, and the northern part of Ireland. England is just England.

Bang-on, Demonic. And Great Britain is just England, Wales and Scotland (since 1707) - with Northern Ireland, forms the United Kingdom (since 1801)

Don't look for easy answer regarding Britain or Great Britain. Those names are geographic names and are given to the main island of the British isles but over the years they have been used for many things.

The UK is more precise but again it is considered as an abbreviation of the proper political term of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to make sure to include everyone. In fact some could claim that the Isle of man and other islands are not included even in this term.

This is how London always saw the way to define the country of the British people, a very vague term to make sure that it can include or exclude anyone as you wish to. You can only bet on one thing today is what the following nations are England and Scotland because Ireland we don't know yet and Wales was never a nation but think it could be one day.

In this century, a total mess if you ask me and we have the cheek to claim that Iraq is a complicated country!
