My maternal relatives have been here since the Civil War at least, but propably quite a bit longer then that. They're English, Irish, and Scottish. My fathers family came over about the turn of the century, and were all from Germany. For those of you who say we Americans don't have any connection to our European heretige, I beg to differ. I was raised being sung German lulaby's, and a number of my relatives spoke German fluently (although all of those have since passed away, several speak at least broken German.) My grandmother has our family background on a plaque on her wall, and has visited Germany, although she has lost connections with whatever relatively we may or may not still have over there. I personally would like to learn German after I have finished learning Russian.

And regarding which ethnic group I associate with the most, ironically, I associate with one that's not in my bloodline at all: Russian. Don't know why, but I am simply fascinated by Russian culture.

Speaking as someone from the old world, there is nothing I find more abnoxious than so damned yank claiming somekind of link to a european country because their ancestor was one of those peasants who couldn't hack it over here.

thats a little like saying people stay in doors because they cant hack it out in the rain. those who are indoors might look at someone standing in the rain as someone who hasnt got the good sence to move. My Mom couldnt hack post WW2 Germany and came to America, thank God! As a French basher, Id rather not admit what my father is. :!oops:

The last of my ancestors to arrive in the U.S. came in the 1830's from Ireland. (County Tyrone and County Clare).

My heritage is mostly Scots-Irish and 'German' (Hesse-Darmstadt, maybe Weil-im-Schoenbuch, not sure about the other lines). If the connections we've found are true, then there's also Dutch, Swedish and Danish. There's probably some English and perhaps some Welsh.

And 'Native American', but nobody has figured out exactly where it came in or what nation. But you can see it in pictures of my great-grandfather who had jet-black straight hair even in his 80's, and who was so dark-skinned that the other kids in school called him the 'N' word.

My partner has had much better luck, tracing his lines back to Scotland (Ayreshire, Beith), Baden-Wurttemburg, Eisfeldt (Thüringen) and Danzig. His family came mostly after 1850, when the record keeping had vastly improved.

Dutch (family on father's side came over in 1660 into New Netherland and settled along the Hudson River); Irish (some on my father side came over in mid 1860s from County Longford), Irish of my mother side (came over from Ballybunion in 1880s); German on both sides (on father side from Prussia in the 1840s, and on mother side from Wilhelmshaven in late 1890s).

I'm a mixture of German and French primarily. I'm also part Jewish, South African, Portuguese, and English. The French part is Cajun though, so I don't know if that counts.
