|
|
This is sort of a thread meant to compliment my other thread. I'll tally it so as to get a vague idea of what americans on this site are- and then maybe that will give a better idea. maybe not! I suppose this should include 1st generation immigrants aswell who are permanently living in america because you, or at least your descendants are Americans.
so if your american just tick which is your ancestry. I'll try and do as many as possible. if its not there just include it in your post!
NOTE: I'm gonna just say British & Hispanic, for the pure purpose of getting as many ethnicities in there as possible. Feel free to specify the exact one in the post. |

Mixed... about as mixed as it can get. Here's what I know of the list:
English, French, Scottish*, Irish, Welsh**, Celtic, German, Dutch, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Polish***, Austrian, Hungarian, Serbian, Albanian, Syrian, Lebanese****.
* - Primary ancestry.
** - My Clan was originally from the marshes between England and Scotland, with 6 families English, 6 families Scottish, 8 families Irish, and 2 Welsh; we think my direct family is descendant from one of the Scottish tribes, but even then, there would have been intermixing.
*** - Dominantly Polish on my mother's side.
**** - Yes, I said Syrian, and Lebanese.
That's what I know of the list, although my family name has been in the United States since the time of the American revolution, and have a history in the military. We fought for the colonies in the Revolution, for the Union in the Civil War, my mother's father was at Normandy in WWII (Utah Beach... the less famous one, but at least he got out alive), my father's father was in Korea (In the M*A*S*H Corps actually... so that show has always had a different meaning for me; although he died before I was born), my father was in Vietnam (Air Force mechanic), my mother's brother was in Vietnam (2nd Lt. because he was drafted after college, artillery commander on the DMZ line... he doesn't talk about it much), and my mother's uncle was actually in Auschwitz, he still has his number on his wrist (he always wears long sleeves), and he's missing his middle and pointer fingers on his right hand because he tried to stop the guards from taking his mother away from him (he was only 9, and they separated the men and women; his father was killed during the German invasion).
That's what I know of my family history. |

Lostsoul3412...I have the utmost respect for gentlemen like your uncle to have survived such horror.....I salute the man for all he is.
Ancestry....My mother is Cherokee and Blackfeet indian and that line can be traced in the Blackfeet family back almost 150 years
The Cherokee back to the trail of tears. No I am not related to a cherokee chief...Everyone claims that one. :)
My Father is german (prussian) and is directly related to King Freidrick WillhelmIII who died in 1840.
Most of the german side were involved with slave trading in the 1600's but later they ended up making beer in germany until WW2 came along.
Some had immigrated here in the early 1800's and ended up facing each other during the battle of bull run in the civil war.
So, I guess I have royal blood in me even if the titles are no longer allowed or used. |

I actually have a tape recording of his experiences in WWII... it's horrific, and at the same time, inspiring. He was living in Warsaw at the time of the invasion, and he father was actually killed by the Germans when Polish civilians were fighting the Germans in the streets. A lot of people make fun of the Polish (and honestly, me too in good humor), but to him, Polish nationalism was what he was most proud of.[/quote] |

Surely we are all decended from modern day Ethiopia - the cradle of mankind.
Speaking as someone from the old world, there is nothing I find more abnoxious than so damned yank claiming somekind of link to a european country because their ancestor was one of those peasants who couldn't hack it over here. |

Most Americans do in fact have some from of link to the old countries in Europe whether you like it or not. Still, it's rather annoying when they use it as some sort of badge of honour as you point out. God dammit, you are American and be proud of it (waves a small American flag) :) . Honor your ancestors, but don't forget your country. |
