Just got a new emachine and during my usual 'un-install all the crap that came with this thing' routine I came across Norton. After uninstalling Norton Antivirus I noticed that Norton Internet Security was still there, so I tried unistalling it using the 'Add or Remove programs' tool.

When I tell Add or Remove Programs to dispose of norton I get the generic message telling me "Setup has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience". It also gives me the option to send the problem to microsoft.

What do I do?

Try turning off the norton services from the control panel before running the uninstall. Norton can be a royal PITA to uninstall.

The Norton programs are somewhat seamless with each other so it is possible that the uninstall of the AV is causing the uninstall of the NIS to hang, reboot and try it again.

Assuming you are running XP, click start, control panel, administrative tools, services. You should see the Norton services in there. Right click on them and disable them.

Ctrl+Alt+Delete and look for norton running in the processes list, select it, and end it.

One other thing you can try is reinstalling Norton and then deleting.

I dunno then. I usually do a full reinstall of the OS with store bought laptops to erase all the adware, manufacturers garbage software, and other crap they preload.

If it didn't come with disks it should have asked you to make a disk on first start up, however it will just reinstall all of the crap you are trying to get rid of again.

Otherwise borrow someones Windows XP disk and reinstall it by using YOUR authentication code on the emachine.
