In this day and age, there seems to be a lot of times where society and everything else is blamed and sued because someone screwed up and didn't do what they were supposed to do. For example, there was the recent Myspace case, where they got sued because some girl got attacked by a guy she meet, knowing full well not to meet people you don't know.

Then there was the whole McDonalds ordeal. People who were eating from McDonalds sued the fast food restaurant because they were getting fat, even though everyone should know that eating too much fast-food will make you fat.

And there was also a case where a kid drowned in a country club and the family sued because "apparently, no one was watching the kid  " It was the family's responsibility to watch the kid, no one elses.

So I'll never understand why people do not hold themselves responsible for their lack of actions (because that's what these are)

Why in the world do you say:

"[...]you live in America, McFranklin, what else do you expect." ???

The U.S. is the only place that has this problem?

This thread delivers. MicFranklin wins at the internet.

Another similar case would be excusing the poor for crimes and general shi**y behavior because of the "Anti intellectual culture".

Regarding the swimming incident...

Make sure you understand that I am by no means saying the family has a right to sue the country club for twenty million dollars, as was mentioned in the article. Given the very little I know about this case, the country club should have lifeguards on duty. Especially if there are children who are going to be using the pool. Sure, it's the parents responsibility, but if the finger always got pointed that way, what's the point of having lifeguards, or other people who are paid to protect us?

I don't agree. If I'm an **** and have done **** things - like lump people of a whole nation into one little box, for example -, I can admit that.

Unlike a lot of people. Apparently. :?

Jack Thompson is definately one of those do-gooders who think that it is up to him to protect everyone from the "evils" of video games.

Jack Thomson is my hero, I could go rob a store, then sue RockStar for making GTA, which in turn sent bad vibes to my mind, which then through a series of demon vibes turned me into a criminal.

Leftist love freedom of speech, as long as they agree with it.

I can say "you know, white folks sure were oppressive", without causing a big fuss.
But, if I say "you know, NAACP sure is racist, why do they complain when African Americans are discriminated against??", then the world comes to an end.

Since society affects peoples actions, of course it will often be used to excuse their own.

People who don't think society has an affect on how people behave don't know sociology.

Accepting responsibility gives you great power but it isn't comfortable. It's so much easier to blame someone else for your problems.

Let's not forget they actually did try to change the name of Cookie Monster on Sesame Street, because some whiners thought that him eating cookies encourages children to eat nothing but cookies. What kind of nonsense is that?

Let's face it, Jack is a fascist. He thinks that he has the right to tell us what we can and cannot buy with our money, all in the name of God. Jeez, there are alot of people who have hijacked religion for their own personal gain.
