Why do women wear makeup? More appropriately put these days, why do teenage girls wear makeup? Why do people get implants?
Making yourself look presentable and attractive is something that is very natural, especially with the Westren Civilizations. I am not disputing this fact.
What I find appauling is the necessity in spending money that gets streamed to large corporations in order to make young and older women look presentable by the standards of galmour magazines. Next time you're in the mall or near a Boston Store, take a walk around. Find the makeup section, and just look at the employees. They look like one of two things: plastic dolls or bags of flour.
I wish that a few select people weren't making money by cashing in on insecurity.
Maybe I am a misfit, but I find clean skin beautiful. I find true beauty, beautiful. Imperfection is beautiful. Insecurity is beautiful. |

ye, ye, as they say, "power to the people", what can you do, economik, change people's ideals? People grow up with a certain perception on the world, with a certain so called "view". Many women grow up learning that the more attractive one is the more successful one can become. It is proven not only on theories but throught statistics also, unfortuantly ofcource, this IS sad. But so it is and you can't beat that, so women reach for highest of the attractive looks hoping to be successful. But hey who are you listening to, a guy, you sohuld really pay attention to a woman's post, if they are not to busy with make-up right now ofcource. (kiddin)
Hopefully this topic is not serious for you and you can leeeeway on it. Just be friends with those women that don;t do what you don;t like, that's it.
best if wishes economik, hopefully you don;t work for OPEC... |

Americans won't take you serously, there are more important problems in today's society to worry about, but you have my blessings to change women's perception of themselves. |

There is something to be said for 'natural beauty'. I like the items that enhance a person's appearance, not hide it and create a different appearance, (like many of the celeb's do).
Like Oprah - have you seen here without make-up?
WOW
She looks like a totally different person.
A little imperfection shows uniqueness: bigger than average nose, little extra curves, etc. Imperfections make a person even more unique than the status quo.
And I also like the 'growing old gracefully' - why fight it? Embrace it and use it to your advantage.
But to each their own I suppose....... |

I think you would be surprised at how much of the "clean skin" you see, is really just subtle makeup.
On that point, I think makeup as an occasional thing is the ideal for women. I remember in grad school in marine biology, most of the girls/women in the program rarely wore makeup. However, every once in a while, for a special occasion (party or a group dinner out), they would put it on. Man, they were knockouts then. They weren't bad before, admittedly, but a little makeup made a big difference. |

Eventually nobody will look the way they were born to be. (colored contacts, breast implants, implants for practicly every part of the body, hair dye, plastic surgery)
I'm all for making small changes that just help your self confidence(hair dye, contacts, a little make up) because self confidence can make a woman beautiful, but these women that go through surgery to try to achieve a Barbie-like look just don't do anything for me. |

I don't wear makeup (except I did on my wedding day, and yes, I was a knockout  ). I just can't be bothered on a daily basis.
There are women out there who feel naked without layers of junk all over their faces. My grandmother (who is a model) will not set foot outside her own bedroom without makeup.
But most of us, I'd wager, we women are not generally interested in looking like movie stars every day. The most time dedicated to our image, is done in minimizing, attempting to eliminate features which make us stand out.
Covering blemishes and blotches, removing leg and underarm hair, finding undergarments which don't "show" and yet are comfortable (not as easy as you may think), taming our head hair so it's obedient and neat.
The OP's point, I think, is that it is in certain corporations' best interests to use advertisement and sales techniques (and salespeople) to make us feel as crappy as possible about ourselves, so that we purchase more and more and more just to break even and feel "normal." That it's a manufactured cultural phenomenon, spurred on by profits, not by necessity. |

Just take a walk in your mall and you can see all the makeup being worn. Plus, look who is wearing the makeup now. It's teenage girls who are getting the idea from their mother, and now are going out buying it themselves.
I know I am just being whiney, but I wish that females would just stop the makeup trend altogether. |

I think people just do whatever makes them feel good, and more power to them. If people want to spend their money on consmetics, that's their business. Personally, I'd rather not spend too much, but I don't see anything wrong with it. I mean, heck, I think everyone spends a little something... I know I like to dye my hair a fun color every once in a while, and I definitely care about not getting zits.
Men do a lot of things to make themselves look and smell attractive too. I think it just goes back to that basic human instinct, the instinct to get laid. |

win.
I personally don't give two ***** about such things. Personally, I think makeup can normally look pretty damn good.
Some people overdo it though...REALLY REALLY overdo it. |

| To specifically respond to the title of your post and to point out that insecurity is not just a female thing, I wonder how much money there is to be made in the business of 'penis enlargement' and 'muscle-enhancing supplements'. |

Not only cosmetic companies pressure women of all ages to strive to be that 'glamour model' out of Vogue magazine. Society on a whole puts a lot of pressure on women as well.
If your boobs aren't "so" or if you're over "X" age, then you should just slink away and forget about it or worse yet, if you're the wrong ethnicity.. which you cannot help..... OR.. you can pay for new boobs and have a couple of facelifts and lie about your age. *shrug*
Just like men are being played for wanting a full head of hair. How many times have you heard a balding man say, "Oh the ladies don't go for bald guys."
So when men are pointing to women who aren't the prettiest things in the world, or the older woman who isn't in her 'flawless skin' age anymore..... or when a woman is pointing to some hair regrowth product to her husband or pointing and snickering at a man that has hair on his back and/or shoulders...... just remember ---- it isn't only the big companies that play to peoples insecurities.
Big companies play to them to be sure.. but they also put out the image to others that to 'settle' for someone that is less than perfect.. makes you just as "imperfect".. and who wants to be that?! Oh my gosh!!
Personally? I don't do the dog and pony show any more -- meaning -- If I leave the house with my bare face, than that's how I leave. I'm what you call low maintence. I didn't USED to be like that.. I used to obsess over my hair, my makeup.. used to carry makeup with me for crying all night.. just 'in case' I had some kind of face emergency.
Any more.. I don't know if it's because I just don't care.. or if it's because I'm tired and worn out trying to impress people... or maybe it's because I only want to be around people that can see past the outside of me and see the inside.
Yes, I still take care of myself.. I dress nicely (although I am certainly not a fashion bug) and I do wear makeup.. not every day and not a lot at all.. just enough to have a more polished look.
But as far as getting all dolled up to the point that if I was caught in a thunderstorm people wouldn't recognize me without makeup? I don't have that problem any more. In my late teens/early 20's. You betcha. I thought looks were the end all, be all.
Not anymore. |

Face emergency, that cracked me up :rotf: |

| Personally while we should be able to see the natural side of someone and we should be comfortable with the aging process, humans have always done things to doctor themselves up. We see how hollywood actresses and now even some actors are getting face lifts and other plastic surgery. The amount of cosmetic products used. Somehow people target America. Ever watch a national geographic special where people in tribes do hideous things to their bodies? the neck stretching with coils, massive piercings through their faces, It's not just America or western civilization that does this, it is human nature. All through history people have decorated themselves with paint, clothing, jewelery. The only thing different about western cultures is that it is marketed for profit more. Certainly nothing is new. It is a part of who and what we are. |
