· Channel accused of drifting downmarket
· Departing executive urges broadcasting restructure

The Guardian
Charles Allen, ITV's outgoing boss, last night attacked Channel 4, accusing the broadcaster of abandoning its remit and moving downmarket in a quest for ratings.
Delivering the MacTaggart lecture at the MediaGuardian Edinburgh international TV festival, he called for a restructuring of British broadcasting, including the possible privatisation of Channel 4 and parts of the BBC.
In his parting shot from ITV, Mr Allen accused Channel 4 of ignoring its public service role in favour of reality shows such as Big Brother, quizzes such as Deal or No Deal, light entertainment stars such as Paul O'Grady and US imports including Lost. |

Channel 4 obviously need to get some up market shows like ITV's Celebrity Love Island, The X-Factor, Bad Girls, Footballers Wives, Cornonation Steet, Emmerdale, The Price is Right and other crap presented by Ant and Dec.
Channel 4 even took Paul O'Grady from ITV - Talk about the Kettle calling the pot and people in glass houese
Channel 4's Lost and other American Imports are a 100% better than anything ITV puts on. ITV is just Chav TV at it's worst  |

The irony is unreal. ITV calling someone else downmarket.
Channel 4 also happen to have some of the most upmarket TV with plenty of excellent documentary's and good comedy. They do have some sh*t on like Big Brother and some dodgy American imports but until ITV start producing stuff like Unreported World, Dispatches etc they don't have a leg to stand on with this one. |

| Also funny how the current C4 head has specifically ruled himself out of the top job at ITV, even though it would involve a considerable salary hike. ITV will be increasingly squeezed out of the market - not downmarket enough for some, not upmarket enough for others and it doesn't have the money of the BBC nor of Sky to turn things round. |
