That's fine, and I'm saying that the state governments should have at least some say over the federal government that is separate from the people.

Ideally, I would have the people elect the House of Representatives, and the President.

However, at the same time I would have the state legislatures nominate their Senators, as well as keep the Electoral College in place to give the state governments shared powers with the general electorate in deciding the president.

For the judiciary, I would keep the system current. Presidential nomination with Senatorial approval.

Wait a sec. How are you going to keep the Electoral College in place and still have the people elect the President directly?

The current system is not a real Electoral College system. It is a perversion of the system.

Tyranny can exist without the government. The people can tyrannize others. This is known as tyranny of the majority, and it is a disease which often ails or will ail a democracy. Also, through similar means, a tyrant can manipulate the people to come into power, and his tyranny will be the result of the majority. These are the means through which freedom is destroyed in democracies. The people need checks upon them as much as the government does. If either one has too much power, the end result will be tyranny. The people are important, and they are what a republican system is based upon, but they are not all-important; the law is, hence republics are ruled by law, hence the term "rule of law." In a republic, the law rules; in a democracy, the majority of the people rule.
