Taking into consideration various changes in society, etc, do you think that any American/global musical artist will ever attaine the level of near universal popularity enjoyed by earlier Rock & Roll Super Stars, like Elvis and/or The Beatles? If so, are there any current musicians who can now claim that level of stardom? If not, why not?

too many bands coming out. i get a monthly music magazine and there's literally fifty new bands(this is just american bands too). it takes no time to get a recording contract now or to put out CDs. there's a ton of variety now. tons of genres and tons of bands to go with each. instead of having a few bands that become very popular we have tons and tons and tons of bands now for people to pick and choose from.

Too much talent is chasing too little market, but as long as there is profit we shall have music. I am good and old, but I thank God in heavan for the Ustation near by so I don't have to listen to country and oldies for ever. That would be hell.

No way dude. Nobody likes their junk anymore, except their old fans.

Three that will last forever:

The Beatles
Elvis
The Beach Boys

I wouldn't really say that the Beach Boys achieved the same kind of fame as the beatles and Elvis.

Or just add the Doors to the list.

. . .

Are you serious? Pet Sounds? Brian Wilson? Look, I love the Doors (I'm listening to them right now), but you have to include the Beach Boys on that list.

Bah... Your mother was a hamster, and your father stank of elderberries. I fart in your general direction. :-D

Just teasing... but still... I hardly think either the Beach Boys or The Doors qualify as being on the same rank as Elvis & the Beatles.

i don't think the beach boys should be.

but the doors are deffinatly elvis and beatles quality. i mean when someone says "name the best classic rock bands" 9 times out of 10 you'll get the beatles, the doors, led zeppelin, jimi hendrix.

Sometimes people add in a kneejerk reaction without really thinking about it. When this question arises (as it does so often) Elvis Preseley always gets added, he is a 'must have' but when I ask "When was the last time you played an Elvis Preseley record", people admit they haven't for years or don't even own one! So if they think he is so great, why don't they ever listen to him?

Same goes for Beach Boys, in my experience. I ask people who nominate the Beach Boys to name me five of their songs, most cannot.

I'm not saying there aren't genuine fans of these artists, but they are in a minority They get voted by peole using received wisdom.

I would doubt many people would add The Doors to the list. When I've heard this type of conversation, the only band that people can agree on are The Beatles. Innovators, song writers, performers, variety of work, a large legacy of good and great songs, still influential today.

Any other artist can have an argument against them, but anyone who says the Beatles are overrated simply know nothing about modern music.
