Let's double their pay. Let market forces do the rest.

Comments?

Holy s**t..

We need a smaller military, not a bigger one. The military is bloated as it is.

Well, there's definitely an argument that if we don't want to pay the fair market value for military labor, then we should have a smaller military.

Soldiers are government property, not individuals.

Also, why would the government pay them more when they can just draft all the soldiers they need?

You get a better quality military with volunteers. Draftees in Vietnam had a habit of "Fragging" their officers.

They'd probably have better luck if they lowered it to 16.

Don't have to be good to fire a rifle and take a bullet.

I know many people who are in the military. I don't think there is that big of a shortage...

Also, they already get paid college and benefits and such, as well as a decent pay, why do we need to give them anything else?

Dig up this guy's bones, extract DNA, clone it, and reelect him president.

He never started a war during his presidentcy, above overwhelming odds.

If one truly believes in the free market, then they would support the concept that the way to increase enlistment is by paying the enlistees more momey.

If you think the military has enough people then the current rate of pay is OK, it's the fair market value.

I just want people who hide behind free-market arguments for everything to be consistent.

We are. We believe that the military is too damn big already...or at least that's what most of us think.

I say anyone that joins the military gets a bag of cocaine. That way not only will more people join up, we can keep them indefinately.

OK, but that's a different argument. The argument I'm making is just for the people who want to increase enlistment. If you don't want to increase enlistment, then obviously you wouldn't want dramatic pay increases either.

?

What are you going on about?

I believe that the army is already big enough. Therefore, there's no need to encourage enlistment. Therefore, there is no need to raise pay. My opinion is pretty blatant. No hiding going on here.

As a former sailor, the military is big enough(but not too big in my opinion). In addition to that, the pay is fair(assuming you're not stationed some place with an insane cost of living and have a family). Enlisted men may not make loads of money, but they're well taken care of. Everything I spent money on while I was in was luxury. As I've seen, that's the case for most unwed members.

They do. There is a reason why America decided to have a professional army after WW2. The reason being that the overwhelming majority of allied soldiers in WW2 didn't fire there gun and those that did fired deliberately away from the enemy. Modern elite army's are trained to kill and so can actually fire a gun at the enemy.

George Washington also fought Muslim terrorists aka the Barbary Pirates. The "shores of Tripoli" in the Marine Hymn come from a police action against them.
