The PM has just announced that he's going to try to improve the "life chances" of problem families.
The scheme is not detailed as yet, however in a speech, Tony Blair will set out a scheme to intervene before children were even born to stop them turning into troublemakers later.
Already the scheme is being branded as a Eugenics program.
The question is, how far would you be prepared to go in order to cut this rot from society? Do you think it fair to attempt to identify problem families and help their children from the word 'go'?
For me, at this moment I think that attempting to identify individual families is unworkable and will be bound to failure - the identified families will be instantly socially stigmatised.
I'd identify areas of low employment and poor education and work to increase the chances of children getting gainful employment (i.e. not McDonalds).
These families need to understand that they need to push their children to do well at school and take responsibility for them when they do things which are wrong.
Also, something needs to be done regarding young girls who have babies at 15-18. It generally destroys their lives and starts the children off on a bad road as there's no familiy support mechanism (the father generally would not be around).

| I don't think anyone has mentioned forced abortions or even sterilisations yet, I would guess that the intervention they are talking about is financial, educational and maybe more power to childrens services to remove children from problem homes. |

I think people have a problem with the 'identification' of troublesome kids before their birth... |

| The scheme seems to be unworkable. A better solution would be to work on improving deprived areas improve and getting familys out of poverty which is usually the cause of the troubles later on. |
