While i was discussing some views on Fidel Castro on a different website me and another member got into a tiff. The main reason was over his definition of respect and mine. I said i respected Castrol on his trait of charisma. The other member said one cannot respect someone without liking them.I placed the idea of respecton(for lack of a better word) respecting a certain quality or trait. He placed it under admiration of the person as a whole. Our debate went on and on with neither of us agreeing. both of us disagreed about the definition of respect, admiration, and liking.

My question now is this;

Can you respect a person and not like them as a person? Can you admire a person and not like them as a person? Does respect and admiration mean one is also "liked"?

No.

No offense to whomever you were arguing with, but they have a very childish idea of respect... it reminds me a lot of what they told us in middle school.

This isn't philosophy, this si a question that 5 year old asks a parent (Becasue I remember doing so LOL). the answer is quite obvious and you were right, you can respect somebody without liking them. To like them would imply that you enjoy their personality and the characteristics that they have. You can respect them for a trait that they have but that doen't mean that you like their personality.

I doubt anybody would disagree for I don't think many people on PCF dropped out of school in grade 2.

Respect applies to traits.
Liking applies to people.
Simple as that; a second grader knows this...
