After seeing the cross-section of people who present it, I consider it to be a symbol of nonexceptance of government control over people or regions(hence, 'rebel' flag). This really seems to be the most common usage these days and I would use it were I participating in a protest of unjust laws.

See, hon, this is my problem. I know, I know - I have the tendancy to stereotype.. but if I saw you waving that flag, Ideal, I'd think you were a racist who hated black people and Jewish people.
Kind of ironic, isn't it?

I never said it wasn't wrong. In fact, I am the first to admit that it is wrong to stereotype - but I still do it from time to time. Everyone does. *shrugs*

That could only be considered a good thing really.

And why is that?

Because everyone is getting whiny about it.

So sorry to intrude on your perfect day.

If every thread on this board was stopped because it got whiny, half the threads would be over. If you don't like what's being said here, then don't read the damn thread.

Pretty simple, really.

The Confederate Flag to me represents a country that was unjustly invaded and destroyed.

The Confederate flag represents a time of instability and ignorance. I think that America has come a long way from that and still has a long way to go. If anything, I'm reminded of what never to do again.

The American civil war had little to do with slavery, that was simply the Governments PR cover. They destroyed the southern states right to succession and did so because they needed the high taxes of those in the South.

So you believe Lincoln killed 600,000 people because he wanted to end slavery? Lincoln was never against slavery. Lincoln was also the biggest tyrrant in US histroy and I feel his assasination was justified.

History is always written by the victors.

Lincoln believed the South didn't have a right to seceed. He believed the Union was compulsory but when the US was founded it was looked at as a confederacy of independent states that had the right to leave whenever they saw necessary.

But yeah the War to Prevent Southern Independence as I call it (the American Civil War was not a civil war by any stretch of the word) was over tarrifs and secession.

Anyone who thinks the confederate flag is a symbol of racism is either an idiot, or completely ignorant of history.

No need to be nasty about it. Just because something meant one thing 150 years ago doesn't mean it still means the same thing today. That has nothing to do with ignorance.

And again, alot of it is about perception. One person's perception about the flag is different from another's. That's the reason for this thread.

Not to belittle people because they have a different perception on something than you do.

Not to belittle people because they have a different perception on something than you do. Sorry to tell you. The confederate flag never stood for or meant slavery. I'm not "belittling" anyone. If they think it means or meant slavery, then I've said my peace. Idiots can "perceive" anything they please. Factual history will crush any subjective ideas anyone has on this purposely revised historic subject.

Honestly, I could give a rat's ass what it meant 150 years ago. What I asked is what it meant today. Very obviously it meant something different 150 years ago than it does today, or at least the way some people percieve it.

If you don't think it's a racist symbol, good for you. Happy to hear your opinion on the subject, as I am also happy to hear others' opinions as well.

A flag is a piece of cloth. It's the symbol(s) behind it that makes it something other than it once stood for, like pride in the South at one point.

I don't know. Maybe is it a symbol of whiney idiots who couldn't have their way legally in the nation that they were a part of so they decided to take their ball and go home. Oh yeah, the Civil War wasn't just about slavery. That is true. But guess what. It was in part, about slavery. Slavery was one of the main issues.

As a southerner Born and Raised I am first an American and I find it treasonous to find pride in the Confederate Flag. A Flag that represents treason against the government and an illegal and unjust way of life. If you think that the Confederate States wouldn't still have slavery, or at least only abolish slavery due to outside influance, you are wrong. It is obvious in the times of the Civil War and the times after that Slavery was a main issue. If you don't understand that, you are blinding yourself to history.
