The confederate flag, to me, is another thing that people in society get offended over, because they're too damn sensitive

But other than what I finished saying, I'm not really bothered by the flag.

Hey, you think maybe they'll vote on a bill to make it illegal to burn a Confederate flag? I can see that happening right now

What are your views on the Confederate flag? Do you view it as a racist symbol, or a symbol of heritage and pride?
Other; depends on who's flying the flag.

When I was younger, I viewed it as a symbol of heritage. Now, while I do think that some people do view is as a symbol of heritage (without the racist overtones), most people who view it as a symbol of heritage are racists. What changed my view? I saw a 20/20 special on German neo-Nazis in Austria. They had two flags up in their office--the confederate battle flag and the Nazi flag. If the Confederate battle flag had ever been a symbol of heritage, that is lost, and the racists have taken the flag over. It is as much of a symbol of hatred as is the Nazi flag.

BTW, I am a Southerner, and have lived in the southern states most of my life.

You said exactly what I feel, Perdidochas. The Kluckers have ruined what used to be a symbol of pride. Now when I see it, all I see is racism, and nothing more.

Same here.

in my limited understanding of the civil-war I thought that kids on both sides fought and died for their own interpretations of the values represented by this flag:

if you want to really honor the southern dead fly this flag over their graves....it's what they died for.

As a child, I considered the Stars and Bars as a symbol of racism. After seeing the cross-section of people who present it, I consider it to be a symbol of nonexceptance of government control over people or regions(hence, 'rebel' flag). This really seems to be the most common usage these days and I would use it were I participating in a protest of unjust laws.

See, hon, this is my problem. I know, I know - I have the tendancy to stereotype.. but if I saw you waving that flag, Ideal, I'd think you were a racist who hated black people and Jewish people.

I have just always wondered if I was the only one who saw it. It's almost like a knee-jerk reaction. I guess it's from living in the south for so many years, and coming into contact day after day with people who did fly the flag, and knowing how they acted, it's hard not to see it that way.

You're welcome to interpret it any way you see fit. My only concern is that you listen when someone says that that is not the case.

There are a list of things I considers to be racist:

-Ku Klux Klan
-Nazism/Neo-nazism
-Burning of the cross
-trashing a synagouge
-someone shouting "I hate black people" in an all-black community

The confederate flag doesn't seem to carry any symbols on it I consider offensive, and yet again, I reiterate by saying people get too easily offended over stuff like this.

Do you feel that a swastika is a racist symbol, as it is symbolic of Nazism? It started out in India, as a symbol of truth, compassion, tolerance and happiness. The Nazis have turned it into a symbol of hate.

That is the point that I was trying to make. I am sure that the original Confederate flag was not seen in the same way that it is today. But idiots like the KKK have turned it into a symbol of hate.

Because everyone is getting whiny about it.
