I would propose they don't--or I should say we don't. The government doesn't pay, we do. Government can't pay because government has no wealth. Only plunder. |

Right.
If there wasn't taxation though, how do you expect things to get done? Are you going to go out and build roads yourself? Are you going to pay our teachers? |

He's an anarchist. No point in debating with real world terminology. |

This seems to be a rather fly-by-night thread.
What's the discussion? |

The government doesn't go out and build roads either.
They hire private contractors to build them, just like you would if you were building a house.

The government doesn't teach our children either. They give money to public school districts who in turn hire and pay teachers as they see fit.
Then, on top of that, independent private schools do the same thing.
I'm not saying the government is not necessary. But you picked 2 pretty easy examples of services that could be privatized without batting an eye. |

Indeed, developers are required by most cities to build roads as part of their developement so very little tax money actually goes to new road construction. Most goes to big boondoggle projects like the "big dig" in Boston, or here in Portland, OR we have light rail (empty most of the time) and now the "Tram" (think huge ski gondolla) to ferry doctors from their million dollar waterfront condos up to the hospital on top of the hill--all to the tune of 55 million tax payer dollars.
My approach to roads would be the following: Sell all major highways and bridges to the highest bidder (they can make them into toll roads); City streets would be owned by the businesses and homes that front them.

Privatize all schools. No vouchers or other half-a$$ "solutions". Sell the schools to the highest bidders.
Two really easy examples I agree. But feel free to pick any others you can think of. If it can't be privatized, it isn't worth having. |

That's peanuts compared to Alaska.
Not 1, but 2 250 million (or something in that area) bridges.
The 1 bridge I can partly understand. It would link Anchorage to land on the other side of the Knik arm. This is not hugely bad idea as land in Anchorage is at a premium.
The other bridge, on the other hand, is pork at its finest. A bridge to no where, they call it. Linking one of the bigger panhandle cities (Sitka or Ketchikan, can't remember) to an island with maybe a hundred residents who are more than happy with their ferry service.

Obviously limited access roads could be all privatized now with little to no problem.
As far as the rest of the roads. I just don't know about your proposal. Esp. all the legal complications it would bring as far as liability.

I don't think vouchers are a half hearted solution at all. Obviously a full private system would be the most efficient, but vouchers are not a bad system at all. Milton Friedman even thinks so.
If we could at least introduce some competition into the mainstream school system, who knows.

Military, police, courts.
This is the trio that I think would be the hardest, possible impossible to privatize and keep their current function.
IE, you wouldn't be able to keep the current function with privatization. It would have to be a new type of system (IE personal body guards for everyone, etc.) |
