|
|
So I awoke this morning to the chirps of birds and sunlight. Next thing I know, my girlfriend jumps on on me, begins tickling my sides as she frequently does, screaming, "It's your birthday! It's your birthday! Happy birthday!" I thanked her for the boisterous cheer, watched her dress for work, then walked her out. My morning conditioning leads to flip on my t.v so I can hear sounds of the war. A war that can end anytime we want it to. I direct myself to the bathroom where I take my routine piss, but this morning is different. I stop to look in the mirror. I look at a guy who needs a haircut. I see a guy who needs to finish school. I see a guy who needs a job. I see a guy one year older and as cliche as it sounds, one year wiser. I gazed into my own eyes and said with reckon, "today is my birthday and it means nothing."
Today I am turning 24. That sounds like nothing. 24 being what is to show for my nominal existence. Truth be told, we all only have one birthday: the day we are actually born. The rest is an acknowledgment of that day on our socially constructed 12-month calendars. Our own measuring point from where we started. In any case, I feel I have lived a good life up until this point. I came from broken yet loving home. I grew up in a great country. I've seen a lot of great movies and heard a lot of great songs. I've read "Catcher In The Rye" and "Siddhartha." I've swam in the ocean. I've fallen in love and am still in love with a great woman. If I were to suddenly die tomorrow, I think I've lived a pretty good life with little to complain about.
That isn't to say I'm satisfied with everything or content. While I am still breathing, there is much good I can do. There is still a lot of things I have to say and stuff I want to write about. It would be nice to leave some imprint on the world before it's over, but getting clogged in those thoughts can drive a person mad. Each day I view as an experience of life. I know my chances of existing were remarkably small. Not only did the world have to fully form by chance, but for millions of years, specific people had to sleep with other specific people at crucial moments in order for me to have ever been born. That's crazy!
So I'm taking it pretty easy today. My girlfriend is taking me to a diner for dinner. She wanted to take me somewhere more upscale, but I wouldn't have it. A burger and fries is a burger and fries; I don't feel less special for paying $7.50 for it as oppose to $14.95 (in fact, I feel smarter). I'm going to open my presents when chomping. I suppose tonight I will be receiving many calls from family members. As much of an annoying chore as that sounds, I'd feel a lot worse if they didn't call. Who am I without them anyway?
Thanks for reading.
JET LYRICS
"Lazy Gun"
Lazy Gun messed up my television yeah
You get no Younger from those colours in your hair
Teach your kids how they're all young enough to fight
Talk about the answer
Tell them they're alright
Change Nothing
Futures in
Close the door
Wear a name
Be the same
Take some more
Lazy gun messed up my television fun
Shoot the shotgun but the war is never won
Who's the enemy, who's sucking on my sun?
I'm the only one left now you've taken all my fun
Change Nothing
Futures in
Close the door
Wear a name
Be the same
Take some more
Change Nothing
Futures in
Close the door
Wear a name
Be the same
Take some more |

Your birthday is yours alone despite the idea that others share the same b-day as you, this day is yours. Your birthday is the celebration of your life which is why some still celebrate the birth of those who have passed.
From me to you, Happy Birthday, live long, live well, and change everything!
:)
EDIT: Oh and it does mean something based on the fact you are 24. Your auto insurance rates should be eligable for a price reduction, woot. hahaha, hope that helps some. |

But on the bright side, the artificial construct called "Your Birthday" serves as a humourous reminder that you are slowly dying, yor body is degrading, your spinal column is becoming curved and compressed as your vertebrae lose their mineral content.
Your skelton is becoming more brittle, and your cartilage is eroding, causing joints to become stiffer and less flexible. Lipofuscin and fat are even now being deposited in your muscle tissue, as muscle fibers shrink, leading to fatigue, weakness, and reduced activity tolerance.
Oxidants are building up in your bloodstream , as you read this, damaging cells, giving you-as all humans-a one in three chance of premature death from cancer as your cellular structure is poisoned from within.
Your Central and peripheral nervous system are decaying and slowing, day by day, until all too soon the massive cellular and neural function loss in your cerebral cortex will actually become noticeable.
Here is a nice quote to cheer you up, though
' “The cradle rocks above an abyss, and common sense tells us that our existence is but a brief crack of light between two eternities of darkness.”
Speak, Memory
-Vladimir Nabokov
Happy Birthday, eh

All power too you! I congratulate you for your burst of sudden realization. It has made me feel more comfortable in my own shoes and I thank you for sharing. I hope you accomplish what you seek.

Why must you be so morbid, [Bible]Monkey? It's amusing, but it may have been a bad time. :D
P.S. HAPPY BIRTHDAY! It means something now, with the start of determination and with the start of this thread. |

| Birthdays are no more or less important than any other day. Sometimes, though, they are a nice excuse to do something special or fun. But that's all it is, a common excuse. Any day can be wonderful. |
