Okay before you start flaming me about different things..know this. My posts will always have references to my findings. I am not flaming YOU as an individual but if you take offense to it look out your door and see what I see. I hope people can see what I see or I can help people understand these things. Okay on the the rant.
Our society is flawed. For those in democratic countries alot of those countries have turned into tyrannical governments. There is a web-site I have found it is: http://www.banned-books.com/bbauth.html
Now before you start asking what does this have to do with anything? I will tell you when people start telling you what to read what not to read which author not to read because it is bad. Has anyone wondered why it is bad? Anyone wonder why things need to be censored? Because governments and people who hold "power" do not want people to know and read things that might uplift people to what they have seen. As you are reading this there is probably people who want this topic to be shut down. Is it wrong to tell the complete and honest truth as I see it? NO it isn't. But "they" (and when i say they i mean <insert government here> i.e. whatever country you live in.) But some of these authors are people I had to read in High School/Middle School. This list is actually post 9/11 to the best of my knowledge. Steinbeck, John is one of the many listed as a challenged, censored, or banned author. As people know John Steinbeck wrote political satire. Now the website is on the thing I showed above but because many are lazy I will post a direct link here. http://www.banned-books.com/bblista-i.html Some of these books were required reading by all my teachers throughout high school. But it was not required for all students. I was the kid who spoke out about the way things were headed and it was pointed out, "One person cannot make a difference these are proofs of this." The saitiric irony is that Fahrenheit 451 which is about censorship was censored alot of places. Please not this is a list of things that happened in schools and libraries.
Now how does this tie in with the topic? Which is my problem with international society. Here is the reason ready? Most of the books that were banned was because one or two people said it was "vulgar" or had "vulgar" language. But alot of these books were written about things that were happening politically then and now. At least some of them were banned and or censored by government agencies. There are more resources but you will have to find those yourself. People let other people or groups say we shouldn't let our kids or we shouldn't read these books. My question is why? What is so wrong with an idea? What is so wrong with independantness? What is so wrong about Harry Potter? What is wrong with religions other than Christianity,Islam, and the Hebrew faiths? Why must I hide my religion from people so they don't ask questions or I don't get harrassed? Because international society has fought revolutions and then after those revolutions are over and the people are "free" they let themselves be told what to do or how to act. Or what they should read, worship, or think. I want our youth of today to read The Grapes of Wrath, Fahrenheit 451, books that explain homosexuality from someone elses opinion, books that challenge the different main stream organized religions, political satires. I want our kids and everyone else to know that we are not powerless. Alone we cannot change the world but we can change the world and how it thinks by speaking out. That's why in the 60's and 70's there were protestors. That's the real reason why these books have been censored or banned. Because of truths that were apparent then and now. Not everything on this list is fictional some are non-fictional. Why must international society go into the night with conformity? Just like the book and movie that I got my username from I believe that we shouldn't.
Am I going to be the thing I hate? AM I GOING TO BE A SHEPARD TO HERD THE SHEEP OF THE WORLD? My answer is simple: Hell No!!! The only thing I want people to do is pull thier head out of thier ass and look at the world around them. If it sickens you join protestors join groups. I do not believe that same sex marriage does affect different sex marriges or threatens our families. What I do believe is that same sex marriage will challenge us to explain to our children of tomorrow why susie has two mommies and your son/daughter has just a father and mother. International Society is lazy and takes the easy way out. Instead of giving a valid reason without bashing on anyone because of thier lifestyle. It is too hard. Why you may ask. I will answer that why. International Society wants you to conform so they can take away YOUR individual powers. They want slaves in the machine and system. They want for us to be afraid. All forms of government is terrorism. The American government for example is a valid example. On one hand we claim to be at war with terrorism. But on the other hand because of laws and policies to make us "safer". We are afraid to exercise our 1st amendment rights. We are afraid of being the next political prisoner. Because of our thoughts our ideations. We are afraid to speak against the retard of a president we have. We are afraid of pointing out the corruption in the government. We fight with these "terrorists" who take a more militant approach causing alot of people to die. I AM NOT CONDONING 9/11 I BELIEVE IT WAS AN ACT OF ATROCITY. BUT ALSO THE AMERICAN GOVERNMENTS RESPONSE CONCERNING IRAQ WAS AN ATROCITY AS WELL. The reason why our sons/daughters/mothers/fathers etc. are dieing right now is because we wanted the terrorism erased from the world. And where we are doing it is racial profiling most of the political prisoners post 9/11 happen to be of middle eastern decent. |

Welcome to Political Crossfire. From your post, I think you should be able to engage in some rather heated discussions.
Writing that pushes itself against the norm isn't only a politicians fear, but it is also a citizens fear. Governments aren't the only one who push for censorship in literature. Remember the Harry Potter series? I can remember seeing a group of moms on CNN protesting the Harry Potter books. What about Germany in the 1940's? Hitler wasn't the only one who wanted to ban Jewish music and literature. |

Interesting read from the OP. First of OP, welcome to P.Crossfire. As the replying post suggest, you will be confronted with many heated discussions concerning your points, keep that in perspective if you lose your cool, (just don't lose your cool.) I say that with respect to the message you are building here in this post.
The message is quite scattered. From book banning and censorship to terroritic governments but I can see your point and somewhat agree with it.
V for Vendeta was a great movie and the message in that movie is awfully clear but it wasn't banned. Neither was Harry Potter as you may have noticed many movies have been made and a few more are slated to be produced, hardly banning of ideas.
Book banning in an education environment takes on many facets and should be examined as they are and not, 'what you think they are'. Banning of certain authors in schools is a part of the education system at work. For certain parents to wish these books out of their child's education is their right as a parent and as part of a community. If these books were banned by other means, such as censorship of certain ideas contained in said books, then there is something to talk about. But in perspective, these books are attainable outside the conventional methods of a student. Barnes and Noble, BookStop, and many other book stores sell these books that schools do not allow. So the information is out there. To add, the internet alone is a source for such publications so the resources are there, just not in our schools. Banning in schools is nothing new. No matter if the pretext is blatant censorship or removing a distraction.
I personally have a few books that were banned by Hitler himself sitting on my shelf, so the longevity of such a censorship is short lived. IE: there is other means to obtaining such publications. In order for someone to ban and remove my guns, my books, my ideas, they'd have to know I had them to begin with.
When I saw the movie V for Vendeta just the other night I too had a sense of revelation as to the current drama that is unfolding world wide. The movie is a great representation of the near future but fails based on hollywood drama and poetry. This one man stands up and changes it all? No not at all. As the ending showed you, it took everyone standing up, risking everything for change in order for it to occur. Much the same as it will in our day and in real life. The movie also seemed centered around a certain city but the idea was to be representation of the 'whole world.' This optical illusion in movie is much harder to obtain in a world of 6million+ people not including those in power.
The idea of a one world government controlling all through television screens and ideas is upon us now and we are not short of freedom fighters just yet. My advice to you is to conduct as much research as you can before making an assertations one way or the other. Afterall, ideas are bulletproof and for someone to have the wrong idea would be a waste.
Good read, keep it coming and please discuss your posts with others. |
