Syrian President Bashar Assad called on his army Monday to increase readiness to cope with "regional challenges."
The president's comments came during an annual address to the military but also as Israel and the militant group Hezbollah entered their 20th day of fighting in neighboring Lebanon.
Travelers from Syria have reported that some reservists have been called up for military duty - a sign that Syria is concerned the fighting in Lebanon could spill over. The Syrian government has not made any announcement about calling up reserves.

Oddly enough, I agree. Assad has far too much to lose in a direct war with Israel. |

| Perhaps he is flexing some muscles so Syria will not be ignored when this conflict ends. However, if his troops should move in a way that might be misinterpreted, Israel might be forced to go for a pre-emptive attack -- and Iran could have its hands forced to intervene. You can see how this could degenerate into a wider, regional clash. |

I don't think anyone is going after Iran any time soon.
I would like to think that the super-green light that Bush gave to Israel to deal with Hizbollah was a way to neutralize a very potent Iranian proxy before going after Iran. But that's just wishful thinking on my part.
Bush screwed up the Iraq war. He is afraid to start another one, with a stronger enemy. He is going to use diplomacy until he turns blue in the face or until Iran gets nukes, whichever happens first. Sadly, it looks like Iranians will get nukes. |
