this poll is divisive.
Why put an option that represents your opinion?
It serves nothing but to insult people who dont agree with your need to abuse your child. Spanking is child abuse, as far as i'm concerned. |

| I'm all for spanking children but will be the first to step in or call the police if someone is physically abusing their child. Children need discipline, once a child figures out that the only punishment they will get is a "time-out" or grounded they have no reason to behave. Use "time-outs" for small children and groundings for older children but it has to be backed up by a more substantial punishment. I wouldn't spank my kids for every little thing they do wrong but occasionally when they do something serious, a spanking is deserved. |

ok, then what is your position of those who disagree with physical punisment besides "hippies" or "do gooders"? |

I believe they are naive and misguided. Apart from the fact that some children do need to a smacking in order to correct dangerous or especially bad behaviour in a way that communicates parental disapproval in a quick and effective manner, I find people who equate smacking with child abuse extremely offensive. There are people out there who are genuinely abusing their children, and banning smacking isn't going to prevent them from continuing to break the law as it already stands... |

| There is a line. Hitting in the face is never called for, and neither is excessive spanking. Also an age limit is necessary as you shouldn't hit a teen ager. |

| i was spanked quite a lot when i was a kid because i was more of a naughty child tahn a nice one. most of the times i deserved it and under no circumstances will i ever say i was abused. the last time i got slapped was when i was 15 and i hold absolutely nothing against my parents for acting like that, all on the contrary actually. when i'll have kids of my own i'll spank them as well, in romania this practice is one of those things noone questions, because we've done it since always and it has always worked this way. in romania, spanking kids being a right thing is like an axioma in mathematics, you don't have to prove it because everybody knows it is correct. |

| Spanking seems fine to me, but for any child over age 6 or 7, I think there's better ways. For instance, most kids play video games now - take that away for a week and they'll probably think twice next time they're about to do whatever they did. |

Spanking/hitting is really completely unnecessary, and gives them the message "if someone pisses me off/doesn't do what I say, hit them!"
There is ALWAYS a way to get the message across. Take their s**t away and strand them in their room for a bit, refuse to give them lunch/dinner and lock the pantry, etc... |

| Some children just don't respond to verbal punishment or time outs. I think spanking is as good of a punishment as any if used properly and at the right times. |

But doesn't that send the message that if, say, I am having a disagreement with a coworker I should take away their monitor so they can't use their computer anymore? I doubt you think it generally does. In the same vein, I doubt that for the most part spanking sends a message that people should solve all their problems with hitting, either. |

| I won't spank. It's a physical way to solving a problem which can always be solved through expression and communication. |

Sometimes a little discipline is necessary, and words cannot always accomplish this. Spanking does not have to qualify as abuse.

It is still seen as generally acceptable to smack children, so the argument against it is not a given. Why do you consider it abuse then? |

Well, circumcision is also seen as "generally acceptable." Where does that leave us? |
