some are predicting the inevitable: end of the world.
They say the two wars raging in the "holy land" are proof.
considering this, there is much anxiety because having to deal with being killed through war/terrorism is downright scary.
lets face it: the people participating in the wars are evil. yes, this includes the United States and Israel and the Hezbollah and Al Queda. Both are willing to kill you if you should "be in the way". They say this is the consequences of "war".
but, whatever. i have no control over decisions my countrys policy makes even if I dont support it.
so ive started to think that if these ARE end times, I feel honored. To be chosen to witness the end of life as we know it. Why not celebrate it? Why not turn it into something other than a biblical prophecy, serving religious organizations who have an agenda to indoctrinate the non religious?
Dont let the religious use the inevitable as this welcome wagon to their faith. Because its these same people who have engaged these wars in the middle east, essentially having the effect of creating war for the dramatic world stage for religious commercializing. Dont buy it.
As an atheist/agnostic: I will be honored to witness the end as no one can say they have ever seen the beginning. |

| While I haven't said it openly, I've been thinking apocalypse. Not for religious reasons though. It just seems like a good lead up to world war three. |

I've always wonder how people that have been hearing what is going to happen from us Christians would still not believe once they see it happen.
I think your post helps explain that. |

there have been predictions of the "End Times" since the beginning times. :P
eventually, our planet will most likely get struck by something and human beings will be wiped away. other animals will not all disappear, however, all life will not cease. so it will be the "end times" for man but not for life.
if these are the "End Times" they are no more "predicted" than any other time.

While I have no doubts this is NOT the apocalypse, or even if there is such a thing, because it is patently absurd.
Man may destroy himself, and what better lesson is there than that, but angels bringing the world to a close makes no sense whatsoever.
Angel 1 'It is time to judge mankind'
Angel 2 'Did we judge them before?'
Angel 1 'No, I just have this need to judge them now'
Angel 2 'What about the ones who are already gone'
Angel 1 'Damn why do you have to make things so complex' |

Yeah, it's pretty obnoxious to keep hearing that the world is going to end soon. How long has it been ready to end anyway? Seems like since I can remembr, crazy people have always been running around, thinking the end of days were coming, and Jesus was going to float down from Heaven and take us aboard, then leave some of us here to suffer because he doesn't like us. Whether or not man ends man, it has nothing to do with religious dogma. |

Well some 'people' say it every time there is something amiss in the world. Tsunami? Earthquake? Heat wave? End of the world because of natural disasters - the Bible says so.
War in the middle east (big surprise)? UN talking about peace? End of the world because of a war - the Bible says so.
Haven't 'people' been saying this since biblical times? Pretty much.
In all actuality, each new day is closer to the end of the world. I would guess that is about as close to the truth about the 'end of the world' as one can get. |

While I'm sure that is many people's actual belief, it is also a very easy answer to give. |

I agree with Izzibeth and Carlin.
Every time that there is an escalation of violence and conflict in the middle east the fundamental religionists predict apocalypse, this very same thing happened in the eighties and there were many evangelicals and fundamentalists that were embarrassed from having accepted with blind faith the “chicken little” ideology; this is no different.
This is also not the beginning of WWIII. |

Do you remember 1988 when that guy wrote the book that was called something like: "88 reason why the rapture will happen in 1988"?
I remember our church getting all freaked out - his book sold like crazy. At least until 1989  |

Honestly, I don't know how any resonably intelligent person could believe this nonsense. Why do some have this dire need to believe the bible is actually real? With the news media and cable outlets of today, it's as if they've given all the blubbering psychotics from the corner of 53rd and 6th television shows.

Some people just need to believe in something. Doesn't make them any less intelligent I believe. Some people stay in abusive relationships. Sometimes feelings and needs out-weigh the brain when it comes to common sense. |

Why can't they believe in something a little less obstructive? |

I don't think they see it that way honestly.
Many fervently religious people see their way and/or beliefs as the right and only way to live and everyone else is wrong. These people are dangerous when they start to act on these beliefs in a way that would effect everyone. |

Sometimes feelings and needs out-weigh the brain when it comes to common sense. I disagree, part of being an intelligent human being is the ability to rationalize ones emotions and the ability to find the more beneficial solution in order to sate ones needs and desires. Being driven merely by an animalistic feeling and need to sate ones sexual urges by raping innocent civilians is hardly intelligent, granted that is an extreme example but extremes better put in context this argument, and it is also not intelligent to, in response to the urge for transcendence and acceptance, to join a cult that espouses castration and suicide such as the Heavens Gate group did.
You are certainly correct in saying that “sometimes feelings and needs out-weigh the brain when it comes to common sense” but this is clearly not describing intelligence but rather ignorance. I’m sure a good case could be made that, in some ways, ignorance is defined by ones inability to surpass their mere feelings and needs and intelligence ability to do so. |
