The only reason I never got an AMD chip is because the names confuse the hell out of me.

To most people it won't matter, but if you're really into hardware it matters. AMD's have more freedoms as far as modification and overclocking.

Yeah, I know.........AMD 64 and AMD 64x2, would be really confusing. :?

As opposed to having AMD, a Germany-based company, in the lead.

Quote: If I'm not mistaken the next major AMD chip is scheduled to mid-2007 - this gives Intel at least a year to hold dominance. I have no doubt that AMD will strike back; but Intel's production capacity and price cuts will pose a problem for them.
You're not mistaken; I see no chance of AMD overtaking Intel in the next 9 months. Even when AMD does release its next generation processor, it's far from guaranteed that it will overtake Intel.

All AMD can do in the meantime is cut prices; they've already openly stated they will be doing so.

Born and raised in the USA since 1969.
Their main fab is in Dresden, Germany. People talk a lot about jobs being outsourced; I tend to think that these are the very sort of jobs we have an interest in keeping in the US (though, again, they're building that new facility in NY; eat that, Dresden! :P).

They have a plant in Texas and the Philippines( I think it's the Philippines) as well. Both places are where they manufacture the Athlons.Texas makes the aluminum cores and the Philippines makes the copper cores.

When Intell had to licence AMD for the 64 bit prossors AMD won that bit of the war.

If you remember Intell came out with a 64bit only chip that tanked.
At the same time AMD came out with the 32/64bit and sold the heck out of them.

If your running a 32 bit application on anything Intell your probobly paying AMD also.

But it was nice of Xp to finally catch up with the technology of yesterday.

I had an Intell core tank on me. Ive had all intell machines tank on me. AMD saved me cash. Cash I them spent on a video card.
I'll stay with AMD.

Interesting note: AMD announced today that it has purchased ATI. What's everyone's thoughts on this?

Personally, I'm somewhat against it. I'm not crazy about AMD teaming up with the top rival to the producer of the best chipsets for its processors.

Intel also pulled ATI's chipset license, so no more ATI chipsets with Intel procs.

See, this is just the sort of thing I was worried about. Not that I was any huge fan of ATI chipsets, but any competition is good competition.

AMD Xtreme Graphics. Now that will be something  .
I see this buy out as an attempt by AMD to expand in the PC market. The vacuum that ATI will leave in the graphics market will be filled in by another competitor.

Eh, ATI will not disappear. All this will do is cause more catfights at LAN parties.

Intel also has dual core processors out for some time now. This is why this is called Core 2 (yes, stupid name, I know) - this is the "second generation" of dual core processors. Also probably the last generation, future processors will have more cores.

If I'm not mistaken the next major AMD chip is scheduled to mid-2007 - this gives Intel at least a year to hold dominance. I have no doubt that AMD will strike back; but Intel's production capacity and price cuts will pose a problem for them.

The current Core Duo already rocks from Intel. So this will be interesting.

Newsweek just ran an article that Intel and AMD are in brutal price war. Intel has lowered their prices lower than AMD which is a first ever so in turn AMD had to lower their prices. The processor prices are suppose to be cut by both manufacturers by $50-60% and new PC prices will drop by $100-$200.

They are both cutting thousands of jobs as well.

All the PC and parts manufacturers and software companies whether Dell, ATI, Microsoft, MSI, etc. are hurting as they have to lower their prices because demand is down. Current PC's and parts have gotten ridiculous as most users will never use the capabilities, businesses certainly do not need to use most of the stuff available. Everything has plateaued.

Yeah the dual cores are nice, but I'm not even really fully utilizing my AMD 64 yet so why buy something that I'm not gonna use other than bragging rights? It's pointless. Intel is coming out with Quad Cores, seriously unless you are engineering bridges, car engines, or running a small country there is no need for such a processor as Windows and Linux run great without them and cannot utilize the extra power.

That is lame, they should have teamed up with Nvidia. AMD/Nvidia set ups are the best.

Someday game designers will catch up and make it all worth it.... 8)

I wasn't in the market to buy a new computer but I couldn't resist when I saw the prices. I mean how the hell do you pass up a CoreDUO 2gh/677MHz, 80 Gig HD with 2 Gig of Ram for $800? Granted it only has a Intel Media Accelerator 950 graphics card but she isn't a gamer so who cares? Plus I have heard it ain't that bad.

Yes, they'll have the Dual Cores running to full capacity when the Quintuplet Core Processors are out. They're just now using the original Xbox to full capacity.

No, it's a definite steal, no doubt. I'm talking about people who already have good PC's. No one needs to upgrade every 6 months for hardware they can't really use.

You could always buy my Kaypro for a lot less.

Once I get my AMD quad core CPU I plan to take over a small island nation.
