You cannot distinguish whether or not the person is a male or female, or young or old.

If there is no reasonable chance for my own survival I would not sacrifice my life for that of another, unless the other was my wife or child. I assume you are saying that this person is a complete stranger.

That's an easy one. Let them die no matter who it is. My life is of supreme importance and noone is worth dying for.

You must not be married or have kids.

For any member of my family, I would willingly sacrifice my life if it would save theirs. How could i go on living if I knew I could save them, and chose not to. Yes a person's life is valuable, but their are some things that are just more important.

That is kind of a selfish thing to say. But in all honesty i dont know what id do. Hopefully I would be strong enough to rescue that person but I dont know.

Well there is noone I know who I would be willing to throw my life away, no family member, no friend, no girl, nobody. And there never will be because my life is of supreme importance.

You ever heard of divorce? Never know when you might split up anyways, so you might as well save your life in the process.

I've been married 23 years so far. No divorce in my future. And by your logic, its like saying you shouldn't try to save money, because you could die tomorrow.

The question is flawed, because normally when this sort of situation presents itself, people don't consciously make a decision to go or not. Normally it is a knee jerk reaction.

How could any of us possibly say, given the set of circumstances laid out in this question, and say for certain what we would or would not do?

Giving our own lives for that of our children is a given, in my opinion.

Unless of course, you're Protostar.

Well, someone has to die either way, me, or the person in question. If I let them die, then yes, someone dies. However, if I save them and die myself, still someone dies. I think of selfishness as having lots of money, and not helping someone who is in need, or having an abundance of anything, and not letting anyone else have any. I don't have an abundance of life...I have just this one. And since I prefer to live, I would do so. I would have to let the person inside go.

I heavily doubt ANYONE here would sacrifice themselves for a stranger. I guess voting that you would sacrifice yourself is just trying to get an ego boost...

That's an awesome way of putting it. I'm going to use that anytime JRM goes on one of his honor trips.

Another problem with the situation, you wouldn't know before going in if your death was certain or not.

Honestly? I have no idea. For a family member or friend yes absolutely. But for a stranger? I really can't say.

I claim that I would, but until I am in that situation I cannot say for sure. I have no problem giving my life so that another can live.

I'll say I would but I don't if I'd be strong enough when I time came. Of course, you'd never really know if you would survive or not and to be reasonable, in that kind of situation both or neither of you would survive. A good Christian would. You're going to heaven but saving this person's life would be an extreme act of love and give them a chance to accept Christ if they hadn't.
