Let's see if I get this straight - a private citizen who is a guest on a niche late night politics show says he thinks the Union may be over and you're breaking out the champers, Luke? Get some perspective, man. Portaloo's voice carries as much weight as yours or mine; he has no constituency in any sense of the word, many Conservatives still despise him while the public at large remember him for having Xavier as his middle name or for pulling 'that face'.
BTW - if 'Catboy' ever got his nose near the trough of government, I'd leave this country quicker than you could say "Sir, I salute your courage, your strength, your indefatigability."
Still Galloway is a unionist while Portillo isn't and some say that what Portillo is saying out loud is what the Conservative Party is thinking. This is more than an attack on Gordon Brown waiving the union jack in desperation, this is an understanding that England should not be Socialist because of the Scottish vote just like Scotland should have never been Conservative because of the English vote.
There is something happening in England that will take Labour down and that will send Scotland on it's way to independence. The legacy of John Smith is no more, Bliar did not bring devolution, he will be remembered for bringing independence to Scotland.

Sure it pains me to see England have to put up with the third world economy above its border, but we can get around a lot of that problem by proper devolution.
"Proper" devolution was designed with English regional assemblies, Bliar did not deliver, devolution is dead. If you think Cameron is not going to use everything he can to beat Brown you are very much mistaken.
I see you agree with Portillo of what Scotland is to England and yet you have not made the decision yet to let it go, why?

Portillo doesn't speak for the Conservative Party in any capacity and how do you know what the CP is thinking? What I see is David Cameron slapping down Alan Duncan for making noises about how a Scot can't be PM.
It's up to the Scots, really, what happens next. If the SNP and groups like the SSP get a majority of votes and/or seats at Holyrood, then they'll be in a position to push London on the Union. Likewise, if at the next General Election, the SNP tops the poll, that would mean real pressure. You then might see a genuinely popular campaign north of the border for a referendum. I'd support the call for a referendum in those circumstances while hoping the Scots would vote to remain.
Luke - the name is BLAIR and not BLIAR. Watch the typos, old boy. I'm sure your mentor George Shalloway is a great typist I mean, look at his hands....

Alan Duncan is no Portillo and Cameron has to understand that this is the best way to stop Brown. The price to pay is very small, after all you all think we are a burden!
For devolution to work it is up to the English not to the Scots. If you can't sort it out down there we will be on our way.
I thank you for your support on a Scottish referendum, I think the people in England are ready to let go, the time is right.
I am sorry but I can't stand liars, Portillo at least says what he thinks.
You can keep Bliar and Galloway too.

When he left Parliament, for a while, I started to kind of like him. Seemed like an intelligent bloke. I turn my back for one minute, and he starts spouting cobblers and silly recommendations, such as that which you've mentioned.
Maybe a mid-life crisis or something. |
