What if we gave everybody a gun, minus the criminals and the mentally retarded? I say yes.

Some people will say that crime will skyrocket, but how will anybody commit robberies or murders if everybody has a gun. The murderer will have everybody chasing after him with a gun. I think that crime will plummit. Then we will not need the police, so we can spend money on somthing else.

This will end bank robberies, mugging, and just about every other violent crime.

What type of gun would we give everybody? A pistol or a semi automatic rifle? I would say a pistol so that people can defend themselves in the streets.

While I do support honest people owning firearms, I feel that not everyone in the USA should own them. I mean, some people will take it as a figure of power and pushing people around, but then again.. the people they are pushing would be armed... but then again, as long as people are responsible, I wouldn't mind.

Beneficial, I am not sure, harmful, possibly, notice a difference in how I act personally, no.. So all in all, it wouldn't be that bad.

I don't think this is a good idea. Firstly if the government orders a bulk order of guns for people, we are talking about people getting a $40 (or more) 'gun tax' in their pay packet.

92 yearold Mrs Miggins from number 42 who can hardly afford her electricity and knows very well with her dodgy hip and shi**y vision she doesn't want a gun. The government has to take her to court for not paying her 'gun tax' (the money to buy > 200,000,000 guns needs to come from taxes!).

Also I think that people who haven't spent $40 on their own gun, frankly don't want one. So if you post them one, they will sell it / bury it / smash it up. They won't suddenly think 'Wow I got a gun for free (and higher taxes) -- I better start carrying it'.

The bit where you say 'we will not need the police'. Well, I'm not even going to go into this, just to say .. naah -- sorry - I disagree with just about every idea this post suggest. (And this isn't a personal slap at you! This is my 5 cents into the debate) :-D

I voted yes, because I think it would be benifical. But, the government doing such a thing would be socilaism..... so I wouldn't really go for it. :-|

I say no. Most of the people who don't have guns already are probably the type that doesn't know how to shoot, and doesn't really want to learn, so I imagine gun accident rates would climb.

If everyone in the US knew how to use a gun and wanted one, then yes it would be a good idea. At the moment theres to many differing views on them for giving a gun to everyone to be effective, or anything less that rather dangerous.

Personally, I don't mind a mandatory militia training and service for all male, physically capable, law-abiding U.S. citizens, a la Switzerland's system, which would also involve requiring proper firearms ownership, with issued arms for those who truly can't afford them.

But unless you get involved in another humongous war, the odds of that happening are pretty much zero.

i say no, mostly for accidents though, its like saying

"hey, should we give everybody their own container or hydorchloric acid?"
most people dont know how to handle it, so giving them one would be a bad thing, if only to keep them from hurting themselves, this is not to say we should bar access to them for the same reason, if they are dumb enough to want what they dont know how to handle......

I mind mandatory anything, especially when the government is involved.

I voted unsure but I meant to vote no.

Why should I have to pay for Winchester getting a new gun? If he wants one, he can buy it himself (sorry Winchester).

Say you and a person get into a verbal argument, and it escalates and then someone pulls out their gun and shoots the other person? I think it would not be beneficial to give everyone a gun, because you just don't know how some people would react to having the power to take someone else life in their hands. If you ever played Grand Theft Auto, that's what i would think it would be like? Also if we didn't need police because we all had guns, who would control the speed limit, traffic when a stop light is out, say someone does go crazy with their gun, you cant have 100 people running down a street shooting after them. To me, it would be a BAD idea.

If I got a gun, I'd go buy some flippin Skittles or Swedish Fish or something.

Without paying of course...
