| What sorts of things are good qualities in a rifle? What sort of things are bad qualities? I'm looking to buy one, and I don't really know exactly what I'm looking for... |

There are many to choose from, what do you want in a rifle? |

What are you planning to do with it?
Are you looking to plink? Self defense? hunt? it all depends on what you are looking for. |

Also, what will you be using it for? (i.e., hunting, personal protection, plinking around, etc.) |

| You guys ask the hard questions. I'd say, I want it for something that I could theoretically hunt with, but it will probably end up being something I just go target shooting with (since I don't really have a hunting-type family). Something that's really good with distances (I'm big into distance shooting, if that's what it's called), not too heavy. Something that I could mount a scope on if I so desired. |

What you are asking for is more than one rifle... Couple more questions.
What "distances" are you talking about? 1000 yards? 500? 200? it all depends.
Semi-auto or bolt action?
What theoretically would you be hunting?
We are narrowing it down here.... |

Well, hmmm... I don't know. I guess it would depend on cost for that one.

Doesn't matter.

Ummm... :shifty: Cougars.

Thanks for taking the time to help somebody who has never bought or shot a rifle before. |

Well if you never shot a rifle before I would reccommend a Marlin 60.
http://www.marlinfirearms.com/Firearms/SelfLoading/60SS.aspx
Its a .22lr. It is top quality, inexpensive, ammo is cheap, and accurate. You can add on a scope if you desire (inexpensive too for .22) and when or if you out grow it it holds its value.
Won't kill cougars but you can piss em off....
Its a good 1st platform to get into shooring with. |

What sort of range does that one have?
And, how does the weight of that one compare with the weights of other rifles? Is it light? Average? |

I'll answer and give another suggestion.
First .22 are generally light rifles. As far as range your not going to be long distance shooting with any accuracy with a .22 I'd say 100yds max, but that being said my sons and I like seeing who can ding the steel plates (about 12" square) the most times out at 200 yds.
Second, Marlin is a good choice but I would probably recommend their bolt action to a new shooter. My oldest son has one, very accurate and excellent value for the money. My youngest wanted a lever action so he got a Henry.
Here's the Marlin I would recommend.
Marlin Bolt Action
If you do want to go the semi-auto route, get a Ruger 10/22, boat loads of after-market stuff you can get so you can customize it to your hearts desire.
Here's the 10/22

Winchester has answered all the questions. I was gonna say 150 meters before the "drop" becomes too much to compensate for.
Bolt action Vs. Semi-auto is a preference. Me personally I prefer a semi auto. Once you get into long range stuff a bolt action can be (and often is) more acurate then a semi. But most of us never reach that level of accuracy anyway...... |

Why is bolt action superior? Does it have to do with how hard you have to squeeze to get the round off (I ask because I shot a revolver, where you could either **** the hammer back and shoot, or just shoot it, and it was a lot tougher to just squeeze and really brought down accuracy, but I don't know if it's the same concept with bolt action vs semi auto)?
Oh, and how much should that cost? (I don't want to get cheated or anything.) |

No you are talking about Double action vs. single action and trigger pull.
Bolt action you have to operate the bolt between each shot to load a new round, with a semi auto it automatically chambers the next round.
Price new under 300 for the SS model. YOu could prolly find a used one for around $100.... |

Its a good 1st platform to get into shooring with. I would suggest the same gun. I bought mine in 1987 at K mart for $59, and have put thousands of rounds through it with zero problems. Great starter rifle. |
