Quote: David Ashley, headmaster of Greenslade primary, says that pupils who bring in packed lunches “are allowed chocolate on a biscuit but not a Mars bar”. If such sweeties are spotted, parents are called in for a quiet word.

At Charlton Manor primary, the head, Tim Baker, says: “Children get stickers for healthy boxes . . . If a child brings in a chocolate bar, we take it out of the lunchbox and give it back to the parent at the end of the day.” Pupils give each other away, he confides: “They say, ‘Miss, he’s got sweets in his box’.”

I don't think it's ridiculous. Children don't have freedom like adults. They should live in a paternalist dictatorship, as befits their mental capacity.......

In my day any tuck in your possession would be chivvied away by a larger, older boy; it worked well as it meant all the older boys were blimpish and wheezing and the younger fellows could make good their escape if needed. But I suppose there's some sort of Bullying Tsar who's stamped out such activity.....

This is totally ridiculous. The school has every right to decide what products may be sold on the premises but not on what foods children have in their possession for consumption at lunchtime.

This isn't about children's freedom. Its about parental vs school authority. No one has any right to tell a parent what type of food they give their children. None

I would say some throwaway cliche like "its political correctness gone mad" but that wouldn't do this justice. This is nothing short of the nationalisation of children

Equally it's the opening stroke in the next phase of the nationalisation of health. Fat tax anyone?

Yes I can see that coming too. I think I am right in saying there is already discrimination against smokers. People do not seem to realise that helping patients whose health problems are not their own fault before helping patients whose health problems are their own fault is a blatant contradiction of the founding principles of nationalised health.

Quite. There's no difference, as I see it, between saying that the 'good & healthy' should be treated before 'the bad & unhealthy' and saying that higher rate tax payers should get better care than those on the basic rate. Those who pay more tax have worked harder, studied harder and 'played' harder than those who pay less tax into the government coffers that fund the NHS. I don't agree with either side of this argument; people who pay less tax are no less deserving of health care than their richer neighbours and nor is the smoker or 'chip butty' addict less worthy than the lover of pulses and wholegrain.

However, I do believe that those who can should be allowed to enter into private health care provision.

Correct. I'm generally shocked by things like this.
