Quote: Spring 2006 warmest since records began in 1948

CTV.ca News Staff

Not since record keeping began almost 60 years ago has Canada experienced such a warm spring.

According to preliminary data from Environment Canada, the average temperatures of spring 2006 have been 3 degrees C above normal.

The rising mercury levels are consistent with a trend that has seen temperatures rise 1.6 degrees since 1948.

And the trend has been accelerating, with five of the warmest springs on record occurring in the last decade, data from the government agency shows.

Environment Canada says last winter was the warmest on record with temperatures 3.9 degrees above normal.

mhmmm global warming is real, wether or not we are causing it is the debate.

The earth is how old?

And we have 60 years of records?

Hmph.

OK, it's the warmest on record. Too bad that means nothing. It's something to note in the almanac, nothing more.

Ice Core Samples

Quote: Ice cores contain an abundance of climate information. Inclusions in the snow of each year remain in the ice, such as wind-blown dust, ash, bubbles of atmospheric gas and radioactive substances. The variety of climatic proxies is greater than in any other natural recorder of climate, such as tree rings or sediment layers. These include (proxies for) temperature, ocean volume, precipitation, chemistry and gas composition of the lower atmosphere, volcanic eruptions, solar variability, sea-surface productivity, desert extent and forest fires.

The error bars on temperature estimated from paleo-methods, including ice cores, is fairly large. I wouldn't want to make economy destroying decisions based on that data.

So, if the warmest summer on record is indicative of global warming, would the coldest winter on record be indicative of global cooling?
