I do like these little scenarios.

Burgler in your house. You creep downstairs. He's packing a gun.

You CAN get to the front door and run away WITHOUT him even seeing or hearing you. Your family is out of town.

But you reckon you have a fair shot at him, and chances are (as in 90% chance with your aiming) if you wanted to you could paint your front room a new shade of 'burgler brain red'.

You personally, what you gonna do? Fight or flight? With flight - you can call the cops .. who may or may not catch him ...

I vote option three: Retreat back upstairs, call the cops. Then get in a good defensive position and wait for the police.

If there's a 90% chance and I'm that close (say within 5 to 10 feet) and I've got a .40 180gr. hollow points... he get's two... center of mass.

Game over even if he had a bazooka.

I would take the defensive position, too. I don't really take joy in using guns for anything other than shooting inanimate objects, so I wouldn't take a shot at the burgler unless I had too. On the other hand, I wouldn't want to run and have to wait forever for the cops to get there, while, in the meantime, the burgler is making his getaway.

If he's in my house without my permission and armed late at night, he's fair game. In other words, I'd shoot.

good question :tu:

beings the family is out of town in this scenario.. i would personally go on the offensive.... i prefer to take the initiative when it is my life, and my life alone, that is in peril.

BTW... i would know before i went downstairs if a person was in the house other than myself... so i would be armed..and there is a great chance he wouldnt live long enough to know what happened.

there are alot of circumstances that arent covered.. and cant be.. so im speaking in generalities here.

the presence.. or potential presence of loved ones would change my reaction drastically...

I'm not going to run away from my own house. The idea that I should consider that is ridiculous. I'm going to yell at him that I have called the police and that I'm armed, and that he'd better put his gun down and unless he has his hands up he will be shot the second I see him. If he doesn't drop his guns/put his hands up, I will be painting the house burglar artery red. (I shoot center of mass, not for the head).

It's my house, and i have a right to exist in it without being either forced from it, or feeling that i'm in danger.

I also have the ability to defend my RIGHT to own property, and he is in no position to try and deprive me of that right.

Airo fair point.

Me personally, I value my life too much to want to risk dying just over some property!

I admit I'd leg-it. I'd come back with the cops. I want the likeliness of me being shot to be as low as possible at all times. Staying in the property increases the likeliness of me being shot. The principle of me being able to guard my own house does not outweigh the fear of a high-velocity bullet shattering my rib cage into my heart (over a damn DVD player and a wide-screen TV! Jees!).

If I'm stood outside the pearly gates and I have to explain that I'm dead because no-one should be able to make me leave my house for 2 hours, St Peter is gonna laugh at me and think 'sucker, it's only a damn house! Get over it!'!!

There are few principles I'd even risk death for. Property is way off the list.

// Edited 1 time after airo posted below. Added the 'DVD comment' and corrected shi**y spelling //

I've said it on these forums before, you have to be better than the baddies when it comes to firearms.

You have to know how to shoot, and you have to be good at it. That's the responsibility of being a gun owner.

With skill and training comes mindset: The confidence in your abilities that will see you through the situation.

Those are the tools which we use to defend our rights, and every right is worth dying for. (The right to live, the right to choose your own destiny, and the right to own property.)
