Is it possible for a United States citizen to own a tank? I think Tom Clancy has one, but I'm not sure.

I don't see why not. As long as you have it properly registered and "Street Legal". I don't think you could get one with functioning weapon systems and engine regulators. Not sure about the emissions either.

It would cost a fortune to insure, especially for property damage!

With enough money and paperwork, anything this side of nuclear weapons, WMDs or classified weapons systems is possible to be owned by civilians.

Really? Could you have an active tank that could actually shoot?

I would think that local police forces would be against any citizen owning one.

Well, if you had the money to do it, the local police wouldn't object.

I've seen T-72 tanks for sale before. Usually the gun is demilled. If the gun doesn't work, it's just a big tractor. It doesn't even have to be street legal, unless you plan to drive it on the road. If you have a bunch of land, you can just drive it all over the place. They use them in large scale reinactments as well.

I'd suppose that you could register the main gun as a destructive device, but the real problem would be getting ammunition for it. As for the machine guns, same rules apply as with any machine gun.

The weapons portion of the said tanks are either removed or disabled, but certainly, one could own one after going through many hoops.

T-34 Anyone?

I don't know, if I become a millionaire, I might buy like 100 acres of land and just patrol it with a tank. :-D

On the avatar: I'm a big fan of Hertzfeld :)

The M113A2 is a very nice APC. Diesel, holds 10 in the box, probably could be converted to running on vegetable oil (for those who want an APC but are enviornmentally conscious!), does about 35/40 MPH and will scare the s**t out of anyone standing in the way with that 50 cal. beauty on the front. They had 'em with vulcan AA's and 108 mortars I believe as well... A little circa 1990 camo and she's yours to take home to the wife! Won't SHE be surpised?!!

No need to be a millionaire to get into a tank, I was in one long enough without paying.

There is always a way.

Getting in a tank and owning one are two different things. I doubt most people want to suffer the heat and pain of riding in a modern tank being forced to do whatever they want you to do. Now driving your own tank around your own property, that's civil liberty.

Besides, memory serves that one man did plenty of damage to a certain town in the US with a bulldozer and steel plate welded over the cockpit. Got mad when the city council kept screwing him over. Ah... politics.

If the main gun is properly registered as a DD, or if you get the form to remilitarize it submitted and approved, then you can own a tank with the hardware. You can buy the unmodernized version of the M-60 tank from the government. There's one guy who owns real SCUDs, rocket launchers, many functional artillery pieces, tanks, other armored vehicles, missiles, and combat aircraft. The guy's a billionaire. Probably never uses most of his stuff, but if you have the money, and are willing to go through the hoops, you can own nearly any kind of ordnance you want, short of WMDs and post-86 machine guns.
