I'm building my own computer with some junk laying around the house. I have a lot of random computer junk because my mom is addicted to buying crap from Goodwill and Salvation Army. And she has a tendency to eventually break the computers she buys. So, over the years, we've amassed a fair amount of computer junk.

I still haven't taken a full inventory, but I need some help deciding which motherboard and processor to use.

Here are the motherboards I have:
1 (probably fried) Intel Desktop Board D865GLC - Product Spec. Number: E210882

The board itself is, it seems, riveted to the chassis. I'd like to use this one, but I don't think I can, because the board, to my knowledge, is fried. My mom did something to it, so that one day, her computer would give an error message when the BIOS started loading. Then, eventually, the BIOS just died. I tried removing the BIOS battery and using the jumpers to reset the BIOS, but that did nothing, and the computer still refused to do anything. Just a black screen. The other day, she was f***ing with it when I told her not to and she even SOMEHOW made the motherboard start sparking with electricity and smoking. So, there's a 99% chance that this board is fried.

Manual:
ftp://download.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/d865glc/BFLC_English.pdf

1 Intel SE440BX - Product Spec. Number: E139761

No manual, but here's some more info on its specs:
http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=250

2 Intel SE440BX-2 motherboards - Product Spec. Number: E139761

(Same as above, but it has an extra ISA slot and an extra PCI slot.)

Manual:
http://users.ece.gatech.edu/~hamblen/489X/mbdman/Prod_Guide.pdf

1 Freetech Sagittarius motherboard - Product Spec. Number (I think): P6F9

Manual:
http://www.motherboards.org/files/manuals/42/MB-P6F90.pdf

Now, from the above, the first motherboard is pretty decent. The rest are absolute crap. So, it kinda s*cks that that one is fried.

Anyway, I have three chips: two Pentium 2's (one has a built-in fan) and one Pentium 3. The first motherboard, the fried one, is compatible with Pentium 4's, so a Pentium 3 would work if it wasn't f****d up. The rest of the motherboards' manuals say that they're compatible with Pentium 2's, at like 200 or 300 MHz, but don't specifically mention Pentium 3's.

So, my question for you is: You think any of the above boards are compatible with my Pentium 3? And what'll happen if I install it and it isn't compatible?

Also, the first motherboard got fried while the Pentium 3 was still in it. Do you think it could have or would have fried the Pentium 3 also?

Oops! I didn't know there was a PC/Tech Talk forum!

Sorry I can't help, I'm running kinda low on geek factor and only familiar that if you buy a new board it comes with instructions making it real easy.

You said the motherboard was fried. Mom was probably playing around with some BIOS settings (most likely the voltage settings, as some motherboards allow you to tweak them). Just for future reference you can set a BIOS password which will lock her (and anyone else) out of the BIOS or even the system if you set the system password as well. Guess that doesn't mean that much to you now. Your processor is most likely fried as well. PIIs and PIIIs might run on different voltages, so depending upon if it supplies more power or less power than the processor needs, it might damage it or it might not boot at all. Sorry for the brevity, just finished writing a 5 page paper and it is 2 in the morning. I'll research it later on today, if someone hasn't already added on.

Just because it's the same processor does not mean it uses the same socket.Socket 7 and Super Socket 7 both look exactly alike. For that matter a Slot A AMD looks like a Socket 7.It all depends on the way it's wired in.You can't tell just by looking. They will also use different voltages which you'll have to manually set by jumper so you'll need the manual to find out which pins to jump across. You have a lot more research to do in order to figure out what all you have that is compatible.
