Maybe someone could answer this for me, I know that ps3 is going to be running Linux, and has a HDD, so, would it be concievable that you could play PC (linux) games on the ps3?

Probably, after people have hacked the PS3 (and dodged the authorities ), which will likely take quite some time.

It's not going to be running Linux, it uses Unix, but so does Mac, same structure, but different.

Are they actually using Linux, or is it just rumor?

Not really the Xbox 360 is locked down tighter than a drum. They use hardware locks to do it. The processors have hidden keys and every other piece of hardware even the DVD drives have codes that report back to the processor, if any piece of hardware is removed, replaced, or tampered with or modified in any way the whole box shuts down permanently.........and because you opened it, no warranty.

Xbox 360 has been out for almost a solid year now without any hacks.

Rumor has it the PS3 will be just as locked down.

Interesting, but if they really want people to use their machine as not only a console but a PC as well, they better put bigger drives in them. 80GB isn't going to cut it..........or let you swap it out yourself without any of the security that the Xbox 360 has.

The whole reason people modified and used Xbox's as a PC with Linux is because they were a cheap alternative to building a PC. At $500-$600 a pop it would be hard to compete with some old PC you can throw together for $300 or less.

Yeah, the hard drive is upgradable, and you can use it as a PC. They're encouraging private developement as well.

There is only so many $400 boxes you are going to waste before you decide it's not worth it as a Linux box can be made for $300 or under. As I said the first Xbox after a few price drops made a damn good cheap PC, but that's not the case for these next gens. Yet anyway.

Yes, but they still won't back their warranty after you crack it open and it can't compete with a cheap PC which can easily run Linux flawlessly.

I'm haven't decided on a next gen console yet and I've gotten an Xbox so that my primary PC can go Linux to avoid Vista which will be DRM ladden. While I'm not into pirating, I'm also not into "renting" things I pay for and that is what you face with these next gen PC's with Vista or Mac OS, DRM protection and EULA's that hold you prisoner.

So my console will be for games only and that is what will solely make my decision between the two. If PS3 really wants to compete they need to drop that price tag. I already have Linux PC's, I want a gaming console not the world.

Nah, AFAIK all that has to be done is figuring out a way to crack the bootloader to boot something other than the hypervisor (or crack the hypervisor itself). The hypervisor is signed with some ridiculous encryption, but people have broken bigger things before. There really is nothing Microsoft can do to stop people from hacking their stuff, all it does is entertain the hackers.

Anyway, once the hypervisor is cracked, emulating a standard Linux kernel on there would be a snap, along with just about anything else...cracking the bootloader alone would make putting a custom Linux on there a little more difficult, but definitely possible. Hell I may even get involved in this thing since I want to see the 360 cracked. I don't even have to buy one to help, either :-D.

Yeah, but the Xbox 360 has been out a while and it took no time to crack the old one. If it's a huge pain in the ass it could only be fun to a dedicated hacker. I'd like to see it done, but given the choice I'd build a PC as I'm lazy and even the old one you still have to do a lot of work to add a hard drive, modchip, etc.

That crazy 3 core processor isn't going to be easy to write a Linux to.

Ya, it'll be difficult to get it to natively run, but luckily the hypervisor provides a nice interface to easily run just about anything on. The hypervisor is harder to crack, though.

But yeah, you're right, it's a lot of work. I only play PC games anyway, but it's fun to spite Microsoft.

While I'm looking to fully migrate to Linux on all my machines, I'm not a Microsoft hater. It is what it is and sometimes I get tired of dicking around with things and fire up my Windows box to use iTunes to download music to my iPod, or play a game, or other things.

I think the Xbox 360 is pretty nice as is and since I don't need it for a PC, I care not for the hacks, but I'd like to see it done only to prove that nothing is hack proof. I'll wait to see what the PS3 has to offer, but I love to play online, and Sony's live service is nothing in comparison.
