I'm sure that will come as a blow to the entire Catholic Church. |

Don't really care but each Pope IMO has had more negatives than positives. |

I don't call ignoring the deaths of Catholic socialists as cool. I don't count encouraging abstience in Africa (and the rest of the world) leading to a increase in HIV to be cool. He wasn't the worst pope by any respect but no pope has earned my respect. |

Where...exactly? He spoke out against the Sandinistas because he opposed Liberation Theology (on account of violence), but I dont know where he "ignored" the deaths of Catholic Socialists.

Catholic Church is against contraception, and as such promoted ways to stop the spread of HIV in keeping consistent those ideals. How you can believe that if you tell someone to not have sex, then they get HIV, that YOU are at fault for spreading the disease is beyond me. |

Socialists were being killed in secret when the Pope John Paul was in his first few years as pope. He could of spoken out but instead he said that the government is right to hand out punnishment to "ungodly people".
HIV needs to be controlled by safe sex, contraception or incentives. Abstinence is simply useless. |

I'm afraid that I've simply never heard of the Socialist thing, so I can not comment on it.

Safe Sex/Contraception - Not an option. That's like saying the population needs to be controlled via conscripted abortion, it simply violates Church teaching about the sanctity of life.
Could you elaborate on "incentives"? |

If it was secret how would the Pope have known about it???
And what governement are you talking about?
What statement has John Paul ever made which said "a government is right to hand out punnishment to "ungodly people"."
Lets see the statement you are referring to? |

The Pope and Vatican had contacts in that country that knew about it and it was exposed when the killings went public.

Not to mention his claim is absolutely outrageous and absurd. The Catholic church has consistently maintained a position of peace and respect for human life . Especially within the past 100 years and especially that pope.
I think its extremely hard for some people to believe that some people within the churh are just good people. Is it really so hard to understand. They pledge lives of poverty, chastity and service. Those that live up to those standards are the best people I have ever met. |

If that's what you think then you've been looking at religion and the Catholic church with rose-tinted glasses. |

What are you talking about? Catholics are christian. Therefore they believe in Christ. In fact we take the eucharist so that Jesus can provide nourishment to our spirit. Catholic priests rarely talk about anything other then Jesus within their homilies.
In fact it could be argued the other way around for protestants. Protestants believe in Jesus but have become so obsessed with the literal interpretation of the Old Testament that they forget the true message of what Jesus is trying to say. |

Wrong, you guys worship these saints, pray with them, and give them way too much credit for what God bestowed upon them. Mary is just one of many the catholic church over emphasizes. You should pray to God not mary or any saint of that matter. Non-Catholic Christians focus on the life we should be living by what Jesus spoke about please refrain from such comments you know nothing of what you speak. |
