i have a question,
if i use a video capture card, capture a TV show, edit out the commercials for my own personal use then its fine?

what about sharing it with others, both digitally, and by handing copies to friends, it was taped off a public channel, obviously it doesnt become public domain, but can the company really expect 100% control of their programming when they broadcast it?

anybody have a clue?

Personal use = legal.

Public showing and giving copies away = illegal.

They can't control it because so many people do it, but if you're caught they will prosecute you as much as possible.

Your'e right they don't have any control.

If your just giving it to friends, don't worry about it but , if you sell it and you're caught, you will be prosecuted.

Now you're into the shady area. You're basically doing it for a gain of some kind, probably a wash as far as value but it can still be an infringement of copyright laws

Personal use is completely legal...otherwise Tivos would be outlawed in a second.

However, as soon as you share that with somebody else to watch at their convinience while retaining a copy for yourself, that's against copyright laws. If you were to give him/her the file and not retain a copy for yourself and not expect anything in return (be it monetary or barter), then you would be within the law.
