Well, I live in a forest. If you go out in the wee hours of the morning and sit very still, a family of deer will pass by. They talk to each other.

I did not know deer made any sounds at all ... until I spent time in a forest. I first heard deer talking when I went boat-camping with friends on Upper Priest Lake about 9 or 10 years ago.

Now that I live in the area, I hear them all the time.

And the sounds they emit are 'calls' ... 'where are you' ... "i'm over here' ... 'danger' ... 'heads up, be alert' ... etc.

Same with squirrels. No kidding. And it's interesting to watch. One sits up in a tree, as the others forage on the ground. If a hawk, eagle or person or one of my cats or whatever enters, the one in the tree starts barking, and immediately, all the one's foraging on the ground scamper for cover.

There are several 'squirrel lookouts' in the surrounding area AT ALL TIMES while the family is foraging for food on the ground. When one barks, the others echo the bark.

I use 'bark' because no other word describes it.

Coyotes do the same thing, of course.

Yes. All animals have a form of communication. Giraffes once thought to be 'voiceless' animals are now known to communicate with low frequency sounds. Elephants use infra-sound for feeling vibrations as well as hearing. I think the more intelligent animals (dolphins, chimps, maybe elephants) have a more evolved kind of communication. Many scientist believe elephants have emotions. Dolphins are self aware. Animals are very amazing creatures for sure. They more science discovers, the more amaxing they become to us

Dolphins, I think, are smarter than apes by a long shot... Maybe not humans, but that's a credit to our thumbs. Given the chance I think dolphins could build a society and civilization of their own. Still, if they ain't smart enough to keep off our tuna... We may never know.

A side thought: Have you ever seen how smart ravens are? They are actualy prooven to be smarter than some dogs, and in cases more loyal.

Another side thought: Chimps ain't smart. Wow he eats ants with a twig! My dog eat ants all day and you don't see me giving him the Nobel prize, he's a moron.

And another: Teach the dolphins to play chess, we have robots that beat people, I want to loose to an animal.

Chimps can learn sign language and invent their own curse words......

actually just read today that they have found that some primates (the ones they have studied is what i mean by "some") actually have a complex series of sounds that they use as a 'language'. look it up. it's interesting.

You know, it's interesting what 'scientists' call 'science' when it comes to animal emotions. Dogs and cats have obvious emotions. Moods. Mood-swings, etc. So do horses.

If you've ever had a bird in a cage for an extended period of time, you know they do not have identical moods every single day of their lives, too.

Arguably, ant colonies are in different 'moods' according to temperature. But one wonders ...

Dolphins smarter than chimps = I agree (but I am a little biased there too so...)
Yes ravens are suppose to be rather intelligent. I haven't seen much studies on them, but what little I have seen is interesting.

Bottlenose dolphins can call each other by name

This might be true.

But can they use a cellphone while driving?

I am not sure of that, but one thing I can say is that I imagine they would be better drivers than most people in my city!
