Senate GOP Fights to Sustain Patriot Act
WASHINGTON - Senate Republican leaders fought Wednesday to save the USA Patriot Act renewal from sinking under the weight of opposition from a bipartisan group that says the measure would give the FBI a dangerous amount of power.
Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., predicted that the legislation would survive a filibuster threat and pass before more than a dozen of the 2001 law's provisions expire Dec. 31. He got a boost from Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, who lobbied for the renewal briefly at a closed meeting of Republicans.
President Bush, meanwhile, urged the Senate to follow the House, which passed the bill 251-174 earlier in the day.

| At least things are looking good in the senate. Good to see that some from both major parties are helping to take down that unconsititutional, bulls**t document. |

Agreed. I look forward to seeing on of the worst pieces of legislation this administration has drafted being torn down. |

| I've always thought the impetus behind the Patriot Act was good, but the way it was hammered out just isn't constitutional. I wish it could be revised, IMO. |

Much worse than this are things like expanding social security, prescription pills, not destroying the department of education but expanding it...
The fascists in the Federal government are complimented by fascists in local governments. So-called "liberals" who are in reality a bunch of brownshirts are looking into banning smoking in your own home around these parts I hear tell. They've already forced all buisnesses to ban it (control of buisnesses to pursue socialist ends = fascism). Also looking into 3 drink at bars maxes and new labels on food. |

stop exagerating... the patriot act is an act that our government needs. it's sparingly used, and if the fbi abuses it, then whomever is responsible should suffer consequences...
why don't you have some trust in your government. whether you like the bush administration or not, opposing the patriot act like this is basicly saying that you have more trust in bob working for verizon wireless, then the fbi with your phone lines...
example: if fbi has reason to believe a suspect has planted a bomb in a skyscraper which your office was is which may go off any moment. Should they have to get contact with washington with supreme court notification, while precious seconds are ticking away? or should they tap the phone lines, which may potentially lead to saving the lives of thousands. it's not a act thats being used everyday... its simply a precaution.
whatever bush does, hes damned for. maybe he tried to have this law fall through so if something horrible does happen, he doesent have to worry about the media accusing him of not doing anything. believe it or not, he is a smart man... (go ahead, make a remark about his grammar. its a cliche by now. use one of the 1294824 other insults floating around) |

I know this is somewhat off topic butt its about Dan Quale I Recieved my General Education Diploma from the state of Indiana for Thirty Dollars.
Long story short my Credits didn't transfer. I came to Michigan to go to
Community College and recieved a comment from one of the ladies at the desk. As to the effect of Oh what an achievement a GED from Indiana..
I laughed in her face and said they didn't bother wanting to teach me to spell
tomatoe either ... I love being hated. It makes me laugh. |

| Can anyone give me some backed-up hard statistics on the severity of the extent that the Patriot Act is being carried out? |

| This is one of the reasons people like me don't vote Republican. They just simply go overboard with their proposed legislation. Too much government control is always a bad idea. |

Statistics are not the point.
The point is that the Patriot Act gives the government un-Constitutional powers that can be used against the citizens.
If it gets used or not, the power has still been taken. |

Exactly, they ends don't justify the means if the integrity of the goal is compromised... this compromise of course being a Constitutional violation.. |

No. He really is not. He is surrounded by smart and crafty men, but he is not either of those, and you will never be able to find anyone in his entire life history, including his own family, that would accuse him of being smart. He's the Bush family sacrifice for the neocon agenda. lol

Well said! That is the exact point, and the only part that should matter to the people. |

The Constitution was designed to outline our freedom and right.
The Patriot Act is designed to secure our freedom.
The contents of the Patriot Act contradict the Constitution. |

normally, i just come to this site to read, but i have to say something after reading above.
well bush hasn't exactly done anything that deserves praise...
and you are totally fine with section 200 of the patriot act? have even read that section? it's not as simple as having more trust in bob from verizon and your example is a poor one, considering you're not taking into account all the powers you are giving to the government that can readily be used at any time against anyone. here is the link that shows you what the patriot act really is.

roving surveillance creeps me out like no other.
oh and the most powerful man on the planet, the leader of the free world, the freaken president of the united states, should do better than a C average as a undergrad. In no way can you call this man "smart"
to the patriot act i say this, "good riddance to bad rubbish".

Patriot Act makes room for more power for the government, and there's nothing patriotic about giving up your liberties.
In short, f**k the Patriot Act! |
