You should get Unreal Tournament, it comes with tools to make your own maps and mods using their engine. I think that would be a great place to start. There are other games that supply the same material with their games.

Video Games are one of the hottest professions to seek right now. Even Community Colleges are carrying courses and degrees for gaming. You should check out your local JC and enroll if they have something.

I would go with Unreal Tournament 2004. Awakening is nothing like Tournament.

You don't have to want a career in it, you can learn a great deal from a class or two.

I've got a friend attending Full Sail for a Game Development degree. He loves it, they have classes 24 hours a day, so he goes to class at like 3 AM.

Quake does the same thing as UT.

Whole tutorials on just how to rebuild the game. Just not as complete as UT but a good place to spend a week getting your feet wet.

wrapping skins is a pain sometimes.

I would suggest you start with modding existing games, such as the FPS games HL2, UT or Doom. As for the gaming industry itself, there are quite a few different skills needed. Keep in minds the top-notch FPSs you're playing were created by a team of dozens of skilled people over the span of a few years and with an investment of a few million dollars. If you want to become a part of this industry I would say you should study arts, programming or sound engineering, but you can't do it alone.

Modding, however, is a great way to start.

i made a crappy word game once. but didnt use directX

btw, DirectX SDK is a good start. its free download from Microsoft.

also, you can get development ide called VS 2005 Express. I believe that is free as well.

but, if your ms-phobic (some people hate microsoft) - dont know what to tell you.

gamemaker is a program that can allow you to work with a limited FPS environment.

I believe there is even a doom style fps which is a standalone program that you can download.

The advice here is good though; to mod existing games. That's an excellent start.
I started way back with the BUILD engine included in Duke Nukem 3d. A rather old program but very simple compared to the modern fps engines.

see Gus thread. Full sail ahead. Its a school for multimedia development.

my suggestion, just realized, involves alot more than you are asking (simplicity).

anyway, its not simple but its how people make games from scratch on Microsoft Windows.

The other suggestions involve an additional layer to the actual gaming. But, nevermind that.

why did I even bother

i would recommend doing quake III arena...you can learn to mod the lvls and skin models and such...i have looked into it, just not my thing...i did it with jedi academy...here is a link you can use to take you to the JK3 modding forums...it is mostly all the same as quake III Arena...

i dont know if this is what you want, but i recommend it for beginners to modding...

As for making an FPS game...most, if not all of them are, as Oak pointed out, made by dozens of people over years, and they all specialize in certain things--engine design, level design, graphic design, modelling, sound engineering, story design, etc.
