It was reported earlier, that she is claiming that the NHS is having it's best year. In a rare moment of clarity and insight, David Cameron wondered aloud 'what planet she was on'.

I watched the highlights of the London Marathon and was once again, struck by the sheer volume of people doing their bit for sick people, hospices, hospital wards and medical research. The thought occured to me that Patricia Hewitt should have put her best foot forward this morning, and then she too could say she had done something useful for the NHS.

In fact, she can do something useful for the NHS, she can resign.

I know a ward sister (.. she even has her own spare uniforms ) who despairs of how things are going. A poll of senior nurses by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) on Sunday found that there had been job cuts in almost 50 percent of hospitals in the last 12 months. A majority (60 percent) felt they did not have the level of staffing to give patients the desired standard of care and almost two thirds of nurse managers said they felt under too much pressure.

"Put simply, this survey shows that senior nurses are under pressure, under resourced and under appreciated," said Beverly Malone, RCN general secretary. Patient care is suffering because of the huge pressures and demands these nurses are facing," she added.

And what did Hewitt do last week? She introduced another 'initiative' whereby a nurse is nominated to be the appointed person responsible for the dignity of elederly patients in every hospital. Yup, more paperwork. 'Dignity'? Christ, I think just being able to give them a bed would be a good start.
