And I thought it was only Jews and Muslims who don't eat pork...

Think again.

Apparently, Christians aren't supposed to eat pork, according to the Old Testament, my friend says. Is this true?

Jesus abolished the dietary laws--he said that nothing that comes from the outside can make you unclean, only that that comes from the inside. This is confirmed by Peter in Acts of the Apostles, and by Paul in some epistles.

Those laws only apply to the Chosen People. Jesus abolished them, as was said earlier in the thread.

So, concerning my Christian friend who doesn't eat pork, I should tell her its OK to eat it because of these blokes Peter and Paul?

We as Muslims are forbidden to eat pork because of dietary reasons, as well as the fact that pork itself is usually unclean.

And Jesus said:

Matthew 7:14 He summoned the crowd again and said to them, "Hear me, all of you, and understand.
15 Nothing that enters one from outside can defile that person; but the things that come out from within are what defile."
16 When he got home away from the crowd his disciples questioned him about the parable.
18 He said to them, "Are even you likewise without understanding? Do you not realize that everything that goes into a person from outside cannot defile,
19 since it enters not the heart but the stomach and passes out into the latrine?" (Thus he declared all foods clean.)
20 "But what comes out of a person, that is what defiles.

You will find in Acts a vision Peter's in Which God let's down a sheet of cloth on which there are all manner of food and when Peter refuses to partake of some of them God tells him not to make unclean that which He God) has made clean.

This change was made for two reasons. 1st and most importantly the dietary laws had become a God in and of themselves for many Jews and second the New Church was to be dependent on God for safety and sustenance not the slavish obediance to a code that technolgy and lifestyle changes had long since bypassed.

The dietary laws were created for some pretty good reasons at the time. It took us until the '70s to eliminate trichinosis in American pigs, for example.

So maybe the abolishment of the dietary laws was pushed through by the pork and shellfish lobbies of the day :)
