Microsoft late last week did something longtime industry watchers thought they'd never see: The company announced it has set up a Web site specifically aimed at improving communications with Linux and the rest of the open source world.

Dubbed Port 25 - a reference to the Internet port that typically carries e-mail communications traffic -- Microsoft's site is an attempt to generate discussions between the open source community and Microsoft. It is sponsored by the Microsoft Open Source Software Lab, a two-year old effort within the company directed towards improving interoperability among the two competitors' systems.

Call me a cynic, but I can't see this as purely being a hello to the neighbours...

RedHat has the fedora project which is their free version community built OS. Many Linux are this way. I think MicroSoft wants a taste of that kind of community "Free Labor" thing Like Sun Microsystems does with OpenOffice.org.

I think this is the beginning of something like that. A community building centralized location controlled by MS to build free software that can offset Linux and the Open Source community from highroading the megaCorp MicroSoft by battling back with some free software of their own.

We'll see where it goes. I've been watching Port 25 for a month or so to try and figure out what there intent is.

Well, if they make their .NET platform a free SDK I'll start believing MS... other than that, I think they're secretly plotting to do something nefarious... though exactly WHAT is eluding me... this can't be good.

Ya, Microsoft's business philosophy is clear: $$$. They're not doing this for the free software community, they're hoping to get some extra dough out of it.

They're doing it for PR and to submarine other free software. IMHO

Check out this familiar tactic.

Make a great peice of community-based software that usurps from your competetion. Drive your competitor into ruin. Charge for or kill that software.

The .NET platform and its SDK are free:download here.
There are also free IDEs from MS - slightly limited but good to get up and running with:VisualStudio Express.

While you're at it why not grab a copy of SQL Server 2005 Express, also free.

Or you have a few other options in the IDE department:
SharpDevelop or X-Develop and you're good to go. These 2 have a ways to go but they are functional.
