Why is that depressive, we don't been a big brother to look up took.
Hell if we are the highest beings in the universe theres a **** of adventuring to look forward to, i don't find it a depressing idea in the slightest, if anything inspring.
We are the highest beings in the universe so long as we make it that we are, and considering the amount humanity has achieved in roughly 8000 years of civilisation its logical to think on the gradual extension of time theres nothing we can't do. |

I hear you loud and clear. Whenever something might go wrong in the world, it's depressing knowing there's nothing I can do to help prevent it. When I was Christian I could pray and get at least minimal satisfaction knowing that I may have made a difference. But as a whole I'm glad I made the decision I did, and I have no regrets overall. I think it's much better to live with my personal beliefs of truth than with blind ignorance. Right now there is nothing(besides proof or hard evidence) that would make me believe in God again, but I'm completely happy about that.
In my opinion there are two major types of people in the world for this subject. There are the people who live for the truth, and always look for logic in the world. They don't take leaps of imagination and don't rest in faith. These people are independent and try to live for the whole world today. This would be the atheists/agnostics, and I'm in this category.
The other group of people like to look for happiness in life, and they want to have something personal and special to believe in. They need justice in life, and are dependent on righteousness. They are willing leaps of faith to make themselves happy. These people are usually the theists.
Whenever I get down about death, I just try to think that it's lucky I am alive, and I tell myself that if I mope around my whole life in sorrow I will never be able to live well for what time I have. I tell myself that when I die I will have no regrets. I won't be dead looking back and wishing I had lived longer. I also try to tell myself that I can't fear anything I can't ever face. If I can't experience being dead, then why should I be afraid? I only hope that I will make a mark on this world and leave a little piece of myself behind.
As for thinking about the direction the whole world is going, that's a little harder to get over. I really want humanity as a whole to at least start to turn a corner, and in my life I hope I can show some people that. I don't want us to keep going down the path of destruction, and unless reform is imminent, that may be what will happen. I don't want to sound like a hippie, so I will mention that everyone knows deep down what I mean. The only way any generation can really succeed is if the generation after it lives successfully and happily. If they don't, then their parent generation failed. It's never-ending pattern, and it's important to understand that so we humans can live and prosper to the best of our ability. |

Don't be so sure that you wouldn't be right. A re-evaluation might be just what you need.
Like Eynon suggested, try prayer. See what happens. If nothing, fine, but would you want to miss the chance that their might be something greater than us out there?
The idea that human beings are the highest beings in the universe is very depressing. I was depressed when I believed in nothing, as well. What intelligent person wouldn't be?
Not me. I always tell myself that whether it's depressing or happy, it's what I see as truth. One shouldn't be depressed with what one acknoledges as true, otherwise what good is life, unless you want to be goth or something. |

It is important to point out that depression is not exclusive to atheism. You can be an atheist, christian, jewish, muslin, wiccan, etc & still be depressed &/or feel sad or lonely or whatever.
There are some people that have become atheists & have never been happier. |

I totally agree.
If what I believe is true, I will become millions of particals floating, unconscious. Not exactly a nice thought to hang on. But it disturbs me even more to think that I could be ignorant to those beliefs and accept other ideas I truely do not believe. |

You do not have to belong to a certain religion to be a good person. Just do what is the similarity between every religion. Be moral. Be kind to your fellow man. Give to the poor. Do not do things you know are wrong like murder.
If you feel like you have no place in life, find a place. My place is expressing my opinion, thinking, Inventing, Humor, politics and exploring a little.
Every religion has a list of rules, but you can fell what the moral rules are by if you feel guilt like if you are ling. The Koran and the Bible are the same thing when you get to the bare roots. |

You could always kill yourself.
I don't say this to chide you; I find great consolation in the fact that my suicide is mine, it belongs to me. I don't think I'll ever do it: I never get depressed, and I have no pressures in life. But I know that I'm just another occasionally rational (but usually emotional) ape with unhealthy, artificial attachments to the world I've constructed around me. I know how to think, but I rarely do it; most of the time I act out of habit. I rationalize my goals to be cerebral and noble, when in fact they're just residual instincts.
Go out and stand on a balcony or by an open window. Or put a blade to your neck, feel the cold metal. Put yourself within a hair of your own death, a death within your control. This is a cerebral exercise, an existential meditation. This is how you pray to yourself.
Now close the window, put down the knife. Sit down in a chair. You're still alive. You could have killed yourself and you didn't. You've been on trial for your life. The charge: your own meaninglessness. Perhaps you threw the case out. Maybe you were pardoned. But you weren't acquitted. You still have no meaning.
But you're still alive. In another, slightly different parallel universe, your curiosity got the best of you and you did yourself in. In this one, you didn't. You went on living. In a sense, you're now on borrowed time. All of life from this point on is extra. A bonus round. "Sudden-death overtime."
The only depressing thing I can think of is wasting another minute complaining about an absentee father God on a random political forum. But such is the nature of our attachments. |

Political Crossfire is by no means just any random political forum. It is Heaven on Earth.

| I don't think so. My view has always been- when I'm dead I'm not going to care about being dead, not like I'm going to be in my grave going "damn I'm dead". Just live life man... |

| Doesn't bother me in the least. Take counsel in the fact you are not wasting your time and $ worshipping a false idol in the hopes that your life will continue even after death, those are the people who I feel sorry for. |

Not really. I take a very absurdist approach to life in general. Just don't think about it too much. If you are looking for religion, that means your afraid of death. But really theres no reason to be afraid of death. Death comes to everyone. |

Exactly. And if there's something after death, I take solace from the fact that I will have eternity to ponder about it. I just hope there's gonna be beer. :-D |
