Doing what comes naturally, in unnatural conditions. Fish ladders are unnatural. Therefore a sea lion feeding in a fish ladder is occuring under unnatural conditions.

That’s fine, I understand that. Then let's set up a fence that would allow the fish to get in and out but wouldn't allow the sea lions to. Was that so hard?

Not nearly as fun as the military shark killer whale idea though.

They tried that. It was unsuccessful. Did you read the original article?

Here's a quote from the DFW website linked in the original article:

Since that time the Corps has installed grates in front of the fish ladders and has placed acoustic devices in the ladders designed to deter sea lions from entering. However, at least one sea lion made its way through the grates and entered the fish ladders this spring.

Yes, I've read it, but I have no confidence in those "gates" and how they were installed. Doesn't take a genius to know a sea lion is a lot bigger then a fish. Try a little harder.

Are you thinking logically? It should be very simple to make a grate that can stop a sealion but not a fish, because of the size differential. Do you understand what a grate is (not a gate)?

Also, are you implying that the ODFW would rather fill out hundreds of pages of paperwork to kill one sea lion AFTER putting in a "gate" (which I would imagine would be a major PITA), than just put in a decent gate.

I don't know how practical-minded you are, but have you ever tried to escape proof a yard, so your dog won't dig out? I have, and if there is one very small area that you missed, or didn't take into account, teh dog will find it. I would imagine the same occurs with these seals.

What's so wrong with killing a few (not a thousand) seals?

It would be cheaper just to shoot the sea lions.
