The Oblivion Machine is on line!

So let me know what you think

amd3500+
SLI main board
2x7600gt
1.5bg ram
soundblster audigy pro
500Watt PSU (Antec)
Aspire X-dreamer II case
Went with fan cooling but jusr got offered a water system for 50 bucks from a freind so will be upgrading to that over the weekend

This is my first monster machine but not my last. My uncle stopped by and he wants me to build two more like it but instead of gaming will be made for professional studio work...mainly music but some spoken word.

Thats all just felt like crowing!

Share your thoughts...share our specs...telll me I'm an idiot for going SLI!

1 AMD X2 4600 Processor
1 Asus A8N 32-SLI-Deluxe Mobo
2 XFX 7900GT Graphics Cards <-Too Bad NVIDIA has yet to make 64-bit drivers for
4 1024KB Corsair PC3200 2-3-3-6 Memory
4 Maxtor 160GB SATA 300 Hard Drives in Raid 0
1 Antec NeoHE 550W Power Supply

And it is flippin sweet. Still debating if I should get a sound card. I spend most of my time on vent so with no big speaker system a sound card seems like a waste. I was saddened that a top of the line Mobo like the A8N 32 still came with AC-97 built in. All hail the crab baby.

Gahh...impressive. My old Athlon 3200+ with a gig of Ram and a 9800 pro with 256megs DDR is starting to look outdated now. Where are you guy's building your rigs? I always go to Mwave.

Well I always have to go to Directron.com because they are about the only on-line distributer that will ship USPS to Alaska. They have very competitive prices though so I'm happy.

One piece of advice I alwasy give people is never to skip in 2 areas.

1. Cooling: A cheep fan with alluminum heatsink costs $10. A great fan with full coper heatskink costs $40-$60. If cheap fan goes out on you it can cost you over $500. You do the math. If you are a spenderforget water cooled. Nothing beats vapor phase change but it is expensive.

2. Power Supply: Don't ever buy a cheap power supply. EVER. Most power supplies on the market are crap. The only good part about a lot of them is if you have some wiring problems in you house you stand a good chance of identifying them if you use a cheep power supply, i.e. your breakers trip and your lights go out. When in doubt go with Antec. They make the best most reliable power supplies on the market.

You don't know how many times I have had a freind call me to look at their computer. When I get there they have lines and distortion running thorugh their screan. The conversation usualy goes like this.

Friend: "So whats wrong."
GTTofAK: "Your old cheap ass power supply that you ported over from you old system is killing your new very expensive video card."

Is there is specific power supply you reccomend that would work for about anything, someone say, like a multipedia developer who runs a lot of graphics software and wants a ridiculous system.

Hmm, what about Graphics Cards? I've always gone with ATI, right now I have a Radeon 9800 Pro with 256 megs of DDR. But my Friend Simpson Said ATI isn't the best anymore, that Nvidia is.

now also, did I read that right, do you really have duel graphics cards and 4 gigs of ram, and 4 hard drives? If that is so, that is a magnificent machine. I'm thinking about getting a duel core AMD 64, with as much ram as the motherboard will allow.

Good god man thats not a gaming machine its a freaking NORAD computer!

I was looking at the 7900gt and decided that I would upgrade in the next couple months. I went with EVGA cards so I can use their stepup program.

For those that don't know buy EVGA is a video card company that has a program wherein if you buy one of their cards from an approved dealer (I use newegg almost exculsively) you then have 90 days to TRADE UP to a higher card with only the difference in cost + shipping to pay.

SWEET DEAL eh! This way I have my cards now (the max I could afford or at least what my girlfriend was not to freaked over!) and in 89 days I registerd my cards, pay them the difference (at this point a mere $80 a card) and wallah I have the best card money can buy! Thats 2x7900gt for $160 bones

Oh and they make some of the best cards on the market as well....

Vapor phase great cooling but the price! I think if your going to go exotic cooling your best bet is liquid....just be damn sure your seals are in good shape and only use purified water.

As to NVIDIA vs ATI thats the war of the ages and really comes down to what you want to use your system for. NVIDIA is better for overclocking, gaming and hardcore video in my opinion. ATI's archetecture is such that it generates heat like you never seen. Pretty mnuch with ATI you need to just bite the bullet and take off the stock fan and replace with a Zalman fan or some such.

SInce you do video editing and such your going to want a LOT of ram. ATT is right that you want to spend th emoney on cooling and on a good PSU....don't go below 450Watts BTW or you will be sorry especially if you catch the bug and go with a 4 card sli set up....but don't forget the RAM. Not all RAM is created equal so spend the money and get the best you can afford. Your rig will be a hundred times more stable and stable (for me at least) equals 9 million dead orcs and counting!
