First of all, if you start with "all your religious beliefs aside", how come you post this in the religion forum? :P
To the issue: I have considered it immoral during my teen years, and in fact I've been a vegetarian for many years, though not exactly for the reason of "immoral to eat animals". However, my opinion changed... drastically, you could say. I now eat (a lot of) meat.
And a side note you will appreciate, Duchi: I've been a vegetarian for precisely 7 years, from one Passover Seder to another 7 years later  |

For every chicken you spare I will eat two more. I will demonstrate the following using religious logic:
1) God created Man to rule Earth
2) God created Chickens
3) Chickens taste good and are healthy
4) Therefore God created Chickens for Man to eat them |

| If God hadn't meant for Man to eat chickens and cows, they wouldn't taste so good. Nuff said. |

Because we are discussing morality outside of religion.

Apparently, lots of meat eaters on this forum.

So what was your reason for not eating meat, out of curiosity?

| I'm eating some tasty beef stew as we speak. I think it's right to eat animals, and quite fun, too. |

That's really better worded as, 'If God hadn't meant for us to eat animals, he wouldn't have made them out of meat.'
I ate meat when I considered myself a Christian and felt that God put animals there for our use. I eat meat now and feel that I'm at the top of the food chain.
Aside from that, I once heard someone argue that you shouldn't eat meat beef because keeping cow populations as high as ranchers do causes them to produce enough methane to have a significant effect on global climate. I'm doing my part to subdue that problem. |

It's wrong, but it's a tricky habit to break..
Especially around the Holiday Season.. |

| I eat meat except when I'm eating with family on Lenten Fridays. On those days, eating meat is wrong, because my dad says its wrong. :) |

| Humans are predators and omnivores. Eating meat is normal; neither right nor wrong... |

Out of disgust: I hated (and I still dislike, in fact) seeing a carcass, or portions of it, on my plate.
Out of compassion: I didn't like how most animals aren't only slaughtered for meat, but are raised and bred in terrible conditions. Animals die in the wild all the time, but they don't have to live in such horrid conditions.
And finally, since I felt it's something I can really do without - I can survive just fine without needlessly killing other creatures.
My opinions changed and I do eat meat often now, but I do not for one second regret the choices I've made. |

| All of the animals we eat are not moral agents, they do not possess sydersis, egro actions upon them cannot be described as ethical. |

well, that's where you're wrong
just becuase something is normal does not make it alright
10 thousand years ago, it was normal to attack other tribes of people and take their land. That doesn't mean that it is right to do so today.
Man evolved meat-eating abilities hundreds of thousands of years ago. The morality during that time bears no relation to the morality we have today.
Right and wrong are moral judgements. It has nothing to do with what is "normal". |
