I have seen a lot of people saying in the proof of god thread that faith is the only way to know god. This position is known as fideism, a kind of radical non-evidentialism. Evidentialism is the theological position that we need some sort of proof in order to believe or disbelieve in god; nonevidentialism is its opposite.
My question to our local fideists is this: you know that God exists because you have faith in God. If I have faith that god does NOT exist, where does that leave us? What if 51% of the world believes one side or the other? 99%? 1%?
The problem with fideism is that it is entirely subjective. You cannot in any way provide objective proof on the basis of faith. Once you accept that a proposition P may be accepted on faith alone irrespective of logic or empirical evidence, you are accepting that any proposition can be accepted on proof alone. Suddenly, 2 + 2 = 5 if I believe it strongly enough, as well as other oddities; this seems to provide a succint counterargument to the fideist position. |
