Why are threads getting locked (particularly mine)?

Just wondering. What is the criteria for something to get locked? Seems pretty random to me.... If it is because they may be getting a tad heated? I think unless they reach the point where there is pointless name calling and the like, they should just remian open. I have seen a lot more idiotic threads go on and on. Anyone care to enlighten me as it has happened to me twice in 3 days?
