As many of you might know Salvador Allende was the President of Chile from 1970 to 173 when he was overthrown by a violent coup that resulted in his death and the coming to power of a Totalitarian General, Pinochet.
This is not a Discussion of Pinochet but a Discussion about Allende, so let's not get bogged down on Allende's "successor" and discuss the politics, policies and character of Mr Salvador Allende.
To Guide discussion I would like to focus on a few questions about the man.
Was Allende a dedicated Marxist Communist or was he a Socialist uniter more interested in the "Swedish" rather than the "Soviet" model?
Though Elected by democratic means would Allende have been a promoter of democracy, as we understand it (limited power of the executive, independent judiciary, powerful legislature, etc.)?
Did Allende's policies result in the economic collapse that marked the final year of his presidency or was the Nixon administration successful in making the Chilean economy "Scream"?
Feel free to ask your own questions but please, when you answer previous questions, provide a link, or a book title, or any other sort of source. If you lacka source and are posting mere hearsay then please make that clear as well so we can help you track down a source...or are able to absolutely refute the heresay. |

Was the real problem with Allende that he expelled so many of his country's intellectuals and economic base that he was doomed to fail? |

Was it because he nationalized Chile's natural resources? |

| Allende was a great president, and he also had good ideas about Chile's economy; he tried to nationalize copper caves, and it could be right if these became national Chile's resources. Maybe, if he kept the control of his country, he could be able to considerably improve life conditions of Chilean people... |
